I got on the list for an Ethos amp for my ES335. Fell in love with that Dumble sound back in '78. Has anyone here played their steel through one? Either the clean channel or OD. Just curious. I know it won't hold a candle to my Revelation but was thinking about maybe an A/B amp switch.

Scott --

I perform quite a bit in Mexico and the backline is questionable at best. I decided I needed to go direct to the board. I use an ETHOS pedal (not the amp version) on a little pedalboard with delay and reverb. I think it sounds really good; very round and warm. I will be very curious to hear your opinion of the amp version.

Thanks Boo. I really didn't expect it would be much for steel. Then again it's pretty rich in tone and if you use the clean channel maybe pretty nice & fendery. The "AMP" version is really too pricey (just under $600) but I'm on the "list" and will probably have one in September.

Scott,
Did you receive the Ethos amp? How does it work out for steel, and what cabinet are you using with it?

Yes it did arrive & I'm diggin it. I haven't used the 30 watt power amp side yet as I don't have a spare 8ohm speaker around. It won't work with 4ohm. So first I was just using it as a pre going through an amp. Then I plugged it into a powered (cheap Behringer) 12" pa speaker. Makes the 335 sing! So after playing around with that for a while I plugged my Sho-Bud into it. Man what a surprise. It's clear & open sounding and you can just dial in the amount of tubey overdrive to taste. I'm only using the clean channel because the OD channel is a bit grundgy for me. I placed a Red Panda Context Reverb after it. The context has delay too & it's pretty lush. The fx loop on the Ethos only works between the built in power and pre so if you're not using the power amp just place the fx post Ethos before whatever you use for power. For steel I still prefer my Revelation setup but I'd bring the Ethos,Context,& pa speaker to any small gig. I keep reading that where it really shines is just straight into the pa board. Not much to pack around and sounds astoundingly nice. If you get one do play around with it quite a bit before deciding whether you like it or not. It took me a while to really find the sound I want but it's in there. Also, the Black Box before it helps quite a lot.
