Would anyone know what the value of the "Gain" or "Volume" pot is ???

There's no info on the one I have that I can find.

I'm thinking 1meg, but don't know for certain.

Thanks for any info....

Hello Steve,
If you have a multimeter, you should be able to measure the resistance of the pot that is currently in it and determine your value. See instructions linked: http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-measure-resistance-of-a-Potentiometer/

Hope that helps.

Ian,

Thanks! However, I know the one in it is not the factory issue pot. A previous owner had replaced it.

I don't know if it's a defective pot or just way out of spec. It will go from full volume down to about %75 and no further in volume reduction.

I've not had any luck with Goodrich other than their replacement cost being ridiculous.

No worries. I'm sure some kind soul who owns a Super Sustain with the original pot will chime in. Good luck!

Thanks Peter!

Mine's the older 4A and the pots are on the top and bottom, so not enough room for that size, but the value might work.

I'm going to pickup a 500k and a 1meg and see which one works best.

Thanks for the replies!

I also have a Goodrich 7A and the gain knob acts just like yours. I believe a gain control is different from a volume control in that it acts to change the in/out gain from unity to some predetermined increased dB above unity.

Steve, please use the pot code when you get your pots.
It will indicate whether the pot has a linear curve or logarithmic (audio) curve.

Found the problem. The pot that was in it only had two legs instead of three.

I wired in a spare 500K volume pedal pot using the center leg and an outside leg, and had the same results. Then I ran a wire from the 1/4" output jack ground to the other outside leg and everything works the way I think it should now. It goes from full off to full on, with no change in tone.

Jerry Jones:
Mine's an old Model 4A and the control is marked "LEVEL", so I'm assuming mine is a volume control. The models that are labeled "GAIN" may indeed function differently, I don't really know, but mine's working just like I want it to, so I'm satisfied Very Happy

I'll install the correct size/type and try the audio taper and I think it'll be a done deal. Might try a 250K pot instead of the 500K. 1meg is definitely not the correct value.

Thanks for the replies!

I've repaired a number of these and use a 500k pot on the recommended advice of Ollie Goodrich and try to keep those little square pots around for just that purpose.
