This weekend one of the groups I work with got the call to be the opening act for Junior Brown for two nights. I've enjoyed his playing for more than 20 years, but never had the chance to see him live until last night. The club was full of faithful followers, and a bunch of musicians that took a night off to come see him. What a unique and incredible talent. I love to see a player with their own distinct style.

I couldn't agree more, Junior Brown is one of my favorites. Saw him at the Rhythm Room in Phoenix, kind of a dive, but it was so worth it.

He probably played "Big Red", his current guitsteel. He's got a pedal guitsteel named "Old Bud". Old Bud's got the Stevens electric guitar and the steel is a Sho-Bud ten string pedal steel. The guitar comes up and out on hinges, so Junior can play guitar one minute, then to switch to steel, Junior will put the guitar down, then get the tone bar to play steel. He stands up to play the pedal guitsteel too.

Yes - he was playing Big Red this weekend - but Big Red has lost most of it's "red" Smile I've seen pics of his newer guitar, but he doesn't take it too far from home yet, especially the tundra's of central Canada in November - LOL!

Does Junior play "regular" pedal steel also? There's some absolutely brilliant pedal steel work (if it's non-pedal, then it's out of this world) on tracks like "Semi Crazy" – is that him playing, or someone else?

On one of his early recordings he covers 'Way to Survive' and seem to recall that he was credited with the pedal steel work.

He does play pedal steel as well, but doesn't seem to travel with it. However, he can get a lot of that out of the gitsteel as well.

At last nights show a few of us were discussing how he might be getting some of his bends because at times he sounded like he was playing a pedal or lever. Some figured he had something on the back, some figured maybe a palm bender. Junior and his wife ducked out immediately when they finished so I couldn't ask him, but in talking to the bass player after the show he told us all bends are behind the bar with his fingers... His accuracy was incredible.

As for "semi crazy". He nailed that intro and turn around with the gitsteel on Friday night but never played it last night.

Junior is known as the Jimmy Hendrix on his Git Steel. You have to see him in person to believe his talent. To say Junior is a exceptional entertainer and musician is definitely an understatement. I was at the George for the Friday night show. The place was packed like a can of sardines and the room was absolutely pulsing with excitement during his show. I have been watching Juniors schedule for a couple of years now and I was willing to drive up to 500 miles (Minneapolis) to see him. I couldn't believe my luck when I saw he was coming to Winnipeg.

Sean, the opening band also did a terrific job. A very tight group and the sound system came through nice and clear. I tried looking up the Pickets but I can't find anything about them.

In the early part of this century Junior played the Minnesota State Fair for a few years, two free shows a night for several nights in a row. Happened to catch one of the first shows and didn't miss a single set thereafter. Accompanied only by Miss Tanya Rae on her flattop, George Grantham on a single snare drum, and an upright bass player (can't remember his name), Junior tore the place up with his Guit-Steel through a pair of Silverface Twin Reverbs. Everything from California Surf to Jimi Hendrix to Nashville to Texas to Bakersfield. Totally mesmerizing. A terrific bargain to see that band for only the price of admission to the annual freak show billed as the "Great Minnesota Get Together."

Mr. Adams was undoubtedly offered the Mullen dealer discount, because the custom made Junior Brown Guit-Steel by Michael Stevens is presently offered for $14,500.00 on Junior's website. Of course, that does include the flight case and the stainless steel Guit-Stand.

Thanks Dennis. The "Pickits" was put together for this show only, although we're all long time fixtures in the country music scene here in Winnipeg.

Interesting there was a band from Seattle, The Picketts, who once did a tour opening for Junior. Lead singer Christy McWilson can be heard these days singing with Dave Alvin and the Guilty Women with Cindy Cashdollar on steel.
The Picketts called themselves Grange Rock

10K is a price break... list is like 14K. Mike's got one made up, ready to go, is my understanding... I think part of the deal is that Junior gets a cut.

Often wondered what George Grantham was currently involved in. For those that may not know, George was the drummer for the original Poco and if I'm not mistaken, was part of the early lineup of the Ricky Skaggs Band.

Umm, good Teleclones can be had for under a grand, likewise 8 string lap steels. That's two grand. There's 8 grand worth of connection between?

He played "Big Red" in the video he did with Hank Thompson in 1997 called "Gotta Sell Them Chickens". "Big Red" is the second guitsteel that Michael Stevens built-his first one was called "Old Yeller".
