On another thread I'm re-rodding the E9 neck on my ancient D10 and it's going well enough for me to start thinking about the C6, and as there are limits to what I can do with a three-hole pull-release changer and fixed cranks some of which are in funny places, I need to know what changes are essential. I'm assuming that along with the standard pedals 5-8, the 3rd string half-tone lower is a must. But
(1) What about the half-tone raise on the same string? I know it gives you the C6 chord lost by tuning the top string down to D and it can get you an F7+ with P6 and a full A9 with P8. (I can raise and lower the same string if I can be bothered to do the metalwork - just wonder how important it is overall).
(2) Strings 9&10. I have experimented with an all-pull mechanism to raise and lower both strings (D9,A7), and it worked quite well considering it was fairly crude, and I could refine it. But with pedals 5&8 down I got indeterminate notes. What happens on a proper all-pull guitar? What you want is for 9&10 to raise only when you're using P5 on its own. How do you make a lower trump a raise?
(3) At present P4 is the traditional S4 whole-tone raise, which I realise is a thing of beauty to many, but I wonder if it might have a more profitable use. (P4&8 are reversed, btw.) _________________ Make sleeping dogs tell the truth!

Hi Niels - never thought to look! Ignoring the ones that seem to have everything, Jimmy Day is the simplest as he kept the high G. Emmons and Hughey both have the top string as D, but whereas Emmons uses the C-C# raise (and recommends it in his course), Hughey apparently didn't feel the need. Out of the others, some have it and some don't and some lower the D, so it doesn't seem to be an industry standard and I'll leave it for now.
As for P4, I might use it for A-Bb as it's next to P7. _________________ Make sleeping dogs tell the truth!

Assuming you have an F lever, a C pedal and a D# lever on the E9th neck, you have an example of how to have a lower and two different raises on a string.
I like the 3rd string C#, I also like the 4th string Bb.
If you use swivels with half tone tuners, no string needs more than 2 rods; one raising and one lowering. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)
