An Evening with Julie Gold & Western Swing Band Beats Walkin’
Saturday, November 16, 2013 -- 7:30 p.m.
Julie Gold composed “From a Distance”, which won the Grammy Award for “Song of the Year in 1991. The song has been recorded by, among others, Bette Midler, Nanci Griffiths Judy Collins, Kathy Mattea, and The Byrds. She’s written dozens of other songs, which have been featured in films, and have been recorded by many artists, including Patti LuPone and Patti LaBelle. Julie will be performing at Ner Tamid, singing and accompanying herself on piano. Her show is a double bill, with the six-piece Western Swing band, Beats Walkin’, appearing as the opening act, playing the music of the great Bob Wills, along with some great countrified jazz. The band features Julie Gold’s brother, Dan Gold, on bass. The band’s virtuoso pedal-steel guitar player, Jim Cohen, recently released a cd of jazz standards played on pedal-steel.
