Hello, in answer to your question, a potless pedal, has a photocell or light beam, and the other has a potentiometer. It's electronic versus mechanical. Hope this helps. By the way I have a potless Hilton pedal for sale, in the For Sale section. Thanks!

Avoid the older "photocell" model. It has 110VAC and can be dangerous. The Goodrich "LDR" pedal that was produced for a short period is the Goodrich potless type.

The Hilton pedals are the ones used by many steelers and regular guitar players. It is potless and does not have any tone variation from off to full on like a pot type does. The Hilton comes in standard and low profile for steel and a special profile version for lead guitar players.

Telonics also makes a potless volume pedal that can be individually set for several modes of operation.
