I met BJ last summer when he played at a modern classical concert in London.
He played his Kline with a lady playing a highly modified sitar.
Most interesting... The sitar was used to produce all kinds of noises with the help of effects and, for example, an electric toothbrush.....
Over that floated a soothing steel, occasionally molested with effects like the Moogerfooger 12 stage phaser and the Ebow..
Wonderful evening.....
Great guy, too ! _________________ Olli Haavisto

BJ is one of our top steel players here in the UK. I would also think one of the busiest with sessions and gigs. There is not a style of music that he cannot play superbly.. Classical , jazz, pop, punk etc and of course country. He is the man! |

I hate to correct you Tim, that's not B.J. on the John Cale song, it's Sneaky Pete.
That Humble Pie song is a revelation _________________ Fender Kingman, Sierra Crown D-10, Evans Amplifier, Soup Cube. |

Ah, yes Joachim. I stand corrected. That album (Paris 1919) was recorded in Los Angeles, so that makes perfect sense! _________________ Sho-Bud Super Pro, Mullen G2, Justice Pro Lite, Evans E200, Peavey Nashville 112 |

There are two funny stories that come to my mind:
I ordered a J.J. Cale album from a record dealer in the US, and I got the John Cale "Paris 1919" instead.
I've seen BJ with Emily Burridge at Gerry Hogan's Steel Guitar Festival. I was sitting there not quite making sense of what they played. And along came Reg. He said "has somebody died?" Well, that's not what he expected to hear. Reg kept on talking and behind us there was a guy taking notes, maybe he was a journalist. Then suddenly he burst "Be quiet!".
I'll never forget that. _________________ Fender Kingman, Sierra Crown D-10, Evans Amplifier, Soup Cube. |

I really enjoy the "Stop The Panic" album BJ did with Electronic Dance Music stalwart Luke Vibert... it included sampling Ray Price's "Nightlife" spoken intro intro over a drum loop, and a fantastic piece built around the intro riff from "Bright Lights and Blond Haired Women" as well as some distinctly "out there" jams |

B.J. is a truly amazing and versatile player, but if he never did anything other then "Tiny Dancer" his place in steel guitar history would be secure. |

BJ also recorded with the late Gerry Rafferty " Right down the line" comes to mind which was later covered by Weldon on his album Pedalman. |

With the greatest respect to all concerned, the BEST gig I ever saw was Doug Sahm at the Venue, London... rip Sir Douglas...
but the second best ever gig was seeing Terry Allen, touring in the UK his 'Lubbock on Everything' album. This would have been around 1981. The album featured superb playing on steel guitar by none other than Lloyd Maines. Well, when I learned that Terry Allen would be playing in London, I couldn't wait to see him but wondered whether there'd be any steel guitar at the gig.
No worries - B J Cole was on psg and BLEW me away - (and Terry too, I believe) if anything, his playing in a live situation, with a small band, surpassed Lloyd, even when I finally saw him, with the Joe Ely band. All credit to B J - a master of his instrument. _________________ Ben-Rom #017 'Lorelei', Guild D25, Epiphone 'Joe Pass', Roland 40XL, Hilton VP

BJ Cole is one of my favorite steel guitarists and one of my favorite musicians period. He plays exceeding well, he's creative, dedicated, and has an unfailing sense of taste. He also blessed with a musical curiosity. My friend BJ -the great BJ Cole. _________________ www.susanalcorn.net

I love that whole album, but the BJ Cole intro, and solo, on that song is one of the best parts.

I never thought that this was pedal steel, before you two mentioned it. Thanks. _________________ Fender Kingman, Sierra Crown D-10, Evans Amplifier, Soup Cube. |
