We have a quorum! ASGC is proud to announce our featured artist for November, Ray Hadaway, steeler for the Westernaires:

http://thewesternaires.com/id1.html

He'll be accompanied by John Chandler (drums), Charlie Irwin (bass), and a new face, Jerry Don Motley, on guitar. Ray says he's bringing a fiddle player, so we can expect a great show.

We kick off with a round-robin jam at 3pm... Ray will take over at 4pm, then after his set we'll jam on out 'till 6pm or so. We are at our normal venue:

290 West Club
12013 U.S. 290W
Austin, TX 78737
(512) 288-0808

... and as usual they'll have great hamburgers for sale.

Again, thanks to Ken Metcalf for his leadership, I hope I can fill his (big) boots. Expect to see Ken still fulfilling support duties as he can (website, newsletter, etc). Y'all come out and support our local steel scene!

Commodore Dave! Hope to see you there... and you're welcome.

We need to get creative with schemes to help pay for the backup band (they're pros)... I'm going to bring an 8-string Morrel lap-steel to raffle or auction off, I haven't decided which... tired of lookin' at it.

I believe Rose Sinclair, Wayne Dahl, and myself will be in attendance. Looking forward to hearing Ray Hadaway, and the addition of Jerry Don Motley, an old pickin' buddy of mine from the great 80's Austin dance hall scene, as the new guitarist in the band.

Here's the guitar I'm donating... it will be up for silent auction during the meeting... I'll start the bidding low, this needs to go to a good home, and it's for a good cause. It's a factory second, the painting on the neck bled a little... hard to spot. It's the Pro model, with the tuners straight up... and a nice piece of maple for the body. Come on out, hear the jams, and bid on this guitar... one like it (but a lesser model) just sold on here for $175.

Wow, it was a great meeting, a great jam session, and an excellent performance by Ray Hadaway from the Westernaires band, who brought their fiddler Gerald Kiner (unsure of spelling but a fine fiddle man) with him. Ray performed a very well-presented and received set of traditional country and western swing tunes. Ray is also an excellent singer and front man with the gift of gab.

We only had 4 jammers, but it was the pedal players vs. the non-pedalers and each of us was up to the task... Stephen Cowell and Rose Sinclair on one side of the dance floor, and on the other, mashing the pedals, Wayne Dahl and your humble correspondent. A wonderful give-and-take between all the players and the band ensued, and it was a general mutual admiration society. We played everything from Noel Boggs to Ray Price, Duke Ellington to Benny Goodman, and all kinds of good stuff.

There were a bunch of newbies just hanging around and listening to the playing, and Neil Flanz got a couple new students on the strength of his well-deserved reputation by just hanging out and meeting the folks.

The band was the usual suspects: John Chandler on drums, Charlie Irwin on bass, and the newest addition on guitar, Jerry Don Motley. Since I've known and worked with all these players professionally for decades, playing to their rhythm work was like putting on an old pair of your most comfortable shoes. Excellent country jazz musicians, all.

Hopefully ASGC photographer Chuck Interrante will soon send some visual documentation of today's party.

Next meeting: Dec. 15, unless new trail boss Cowell notifies us otherwise. Stayed tuned.

I tried to make it, but had too much stuff going on. I hope to make the next one. Steve Cowell, put me on your mailing list - howard.kalish@amd.com. Glad you folks are doing this again.

I got to jam some with Wayne Dahl later that evening at El Mercado with Jim Stringer. Wayne is mighty fine. I dig his style. Hope to hear more.

Howard, it would have been nice to see you there... I hope you can make the Dec 15th jam/party, looks like it's going to make with a slight change of personnel... I'll do a full announcement when it does.

And good idea on a mailing list... that seems to reach a lot of folks better than having them check the Events section religiously (like I do). Anyone else interested in being on the list, send me a personal email via the forum... don't use the 'message' button, email's just better all 'round.

And if anyone's interested in featuring for December 15 let me know... otherwise, we'll just jam and party! Ray and Gerald (fiddle) had a really good time entertaining us.
