I have a Fox amp that I really like but my playing out days are over 
The amp sounds great when I am jamming in my studio with other players such as electric Bass, drums, electric guitar and at a healthy sound level.
I was thinking about changing the speaker to a JBL-K130 or another type as I feel the amp has to be pushed a bit to get that sweet sound so maybe for my application a lower wattage speaker ma be more sensitive?
I believe the amp is 80 watts with 4 6L6 power tubes. I have other amps including a 1965 Fender Twin and that is too loud to play with a an acoustic guitar and upright bass player.
Your thoughts? |

Changing the speaker won't lower the volume
And attenuators void the warranty on the output transformer
Good candidate for London power type voltage scaling if there's room

Hi Tim:
I don't want to fiddle with anything electrical in the amp but was figuring my JBL-K130 that is 8 ohms may sweeten the sound at a lower volume to jam with acoustic guitar players. The SICA speaker is a great speaker but it's 4 ohms and I understand an 8 ohm speaker is a bit more even sounding.
I am searching here and posing a question and there is nothing wrong with the amp. Matter of fact, I have been using the amp with a Jazz guitar and it is a gem. |

| You need to use a 4 ohm speaker, not an 8 ohm. The output transformer is designed for a 4 ohm load. If you want to use an 8 ohm it has to be plugged into the aux speaker jack, that will transfer the output to the 8 ohm tap. The main jack will then be shorted in series with 8 ohm speaker via a contact on it. |

Ken, you are a wealth of wisdom. I am going to put the K-130 in a spare cab and disconect the internal speaker and hook it up as you mentioned to see how it sounds. Easy way to test it out. I'll report back in a few days.

you can always do the old "put in an 8ohm speaker and pull the two inner power tubes" trick
you will be amazed at how loud the amp still is. You are not going to get that sweet spot without tearing the paint off the walls with Ken's amp - he built em loud!

Ken, thanks so much for clarifying this issue. The amp is great and will never leave my stable. Just want to fine tune and experiment a bit.
