It's a six string tuned to D with four pedals.

I just pulled out my September issue of Vintage Guitar Magazine...Robert Randolph is featured in the cover story. You're right, Clyde, Robert said Jackson Steel Guitars made the six string for him. For his more conventional pedal steels, there are two Fessenden's and a Sierra in the photo of his gear.

That 6 string Jackson is the best sounding steel I have ever heard him play, by far... That thing is ultra modern, but sounds like a great steel from 1940.. Dripping with authentic vintage old time steel guitar sound... I would LOVE to have a Jackson pedal steel guitar... Thats how RR should sound... bob

I just noticed in the cover photo of Vintage Guitar, Robert is seated behind a Mullen...he has quite a "stable" of steels!

Robert is currently touring with two Mullen S-12 G2's and a Jackson prototype six string pedal steel. I am trying to get his whole rig list and pics from his tech. The prototype is tuned open E an the other two are his standard tuning, one 1/2 step below the other.

the mullen on the cover looks like a 13 stranger, as he usually plays. another pic in the article shows him behind a red mullen 12 with 'discovery' looking trim.
i thought he should have given jerry fessenden a shout out since he was largely into the randolph 13 string development.
