I see there is a Nov 5 event at the Broken Spoke, to raise money to help pay for funeral expenses for Don and for home care for his wife. Many artists lined up to perform -- any Texas steelers involved? Austin is a long way from Maryland, but I much appreciate Don Walser and Texas music in general. |

It is a big deal. The last I heard expences were big including the cost to take Pat Walser to the services. I can't be there either but I thank all my buddies who will bw.

What's the best source to buy Don's recordings. I've seen him on TV a couple of times and really enjoyed his work...JH in Va.

Don't matter who's in Austin (or anywhere else) Ralph Mooney is still the king!!!

Don did the sound track for the movie "Second Hand Lion" The movie and the sound track are both great. Does any body know who did the steel work? It's awsome. |

The Broken Spoken is going to be the place to be on that night. Don Walser is not easily forgotten. There were few bigger fixtures in Austin music.
But I didn't know he did the music to Secondhand Lions. It was great! |

Roger,
I think Chris Walls was the steeler. For sure he was Don's steeler after Jimmy Day was unable to do it.

I received a e mail from fiddler Howard Kavish who put this togather, Scott Wall will be there on steel, a killer steelman, Floyd Domino on piano and also Johnny Gimble will there playing fiddle with Howard along with the rest of Don's former band and many many guest singers and sit in musicians. And I think you can expect some surprise guest to walk in also. This will be an evening of great entertainment for a great cause. Lucily I live within 300 miles and can drive there easy enough, this would be a show worth putting the old mastercard to work to make if you want to hear some of the greatest country music in Texas. I am sure Howard would mail you a complete line up if you contact him. I had the mail but it got deleted accidently. How about it Howard? Maybe post the line up on here? |

I'm just now getting some time to look at my favorite internet site, the Steel Guitar Forum, so I'm sorry for not responding sooner.
We are indeed having a big show at the Broken Spoke this Sunday in memory of Don Walser. I've listed the details down below.
There's a brand new reissue CD that has come out that includes 18 of the tunes we recorded in the early 90's. Jimmy Day and Bert Rivera are the steel players. They were both getting the hang of it.
This new CD is called Don Walser and the Pure Texas Band - Texas Legend. It's on the Varese Vintage label.
Glad everyone likes the Secondhand Lions soundtrack. I'm playing fiddle on that. Jimmy Day and John Ely are the steel players. Bert might be in there too. I'd have to hear it again. A fun movie for the whole family.
Scott Walls played and recorded with Don the last 10 years of his career. Scott will be at the show this Sunday, as Doyle mentioned in his post.
Hope to see some of you out at the Spoke this Sunday.
Don Walser Memorial Fund Benefit
Hello Music Lovers – This Sunday, November 5th, we’re going to have a benefit for the Don Walser Memorial Fund with the money going to defray Don’s outstanding medical and funeral expenses and to help with the ongoing medical expenses of Pat Walser. The benefit will be at the beautiful Broken Spoke. It will start at 4pm and go until 9pm.
We have a fabulous line-up of talent. I’ve got a partial list at the end of this email showing those who’ve volunteered to perform. The Texas Swing Kings will start the festivities at 4pm and then the Pure Texas Band – Skinny Don Keeling, Scott Walls, Phillip Fajardo, Floyd Domino and Yours Truly, will take the stage and back up one great singer after another with many very talented instrumentalists sitting in throughout the show.
We’ll also have a Silent Auction, which our pal Linda Branson is organizing.
Please come out and help us raise some money in memory of Don and celebrate his music. I’ve attached a poster to this email. Feel free to distribute it and send this email along to anyone who might want to attend.

I just want to let everyone know that the Don Walser Memorial Fund benefit came off great. We raised somewhere's around $10,000. It was packed from the the first note to the last and we managed to get about 20 different singers and a bunch of instrumentalists up.
Some highlights were having 93-year old Pinetop Perkins sit in while Johnny Gimble and I were playing fiddles. Pinetop lives in Austin now and used to be in Muddy Waters band. We played the blues.
Lucky Oceans was visiting from Australia and sat in on Scott Walls' steel. Played great.
My daughter Corrina got up and sang 2 Loretta Lynn songs.
Just a gas to play with the Pure Texas Band again. What a great groove ol' Skinny Don and Phillip Fajardo get. The dancefloor was churning all day.
Thanks to everyone who participated or attended.
As Don would say, I take back half that stuff I said about you.
Keep swingin',

Howard, Have you guys thought of keeping the Pure Texas Band together and do some show s with various singer, old and up and coming?
It might be a nice concept.
Wish I could have been at the tribute, I have all of Don's and TPTB's Cds and love them.
