I will be in Nashville a few days and Sun. is our 29th anniversary and was wondering if anyone knows of a good place where the locals go for a nice dinner? Also, any steel players in town?

I'll be in town Saturday at The Stage from 11:00 AM till 2:15 PM and The Wheel from 6:00 PM till 10:00 PM. As far as nice places to eat Nashville is full of them all over town. _________________ Zumsteel steel guitars, Telonics and Peavey amplifiers, GHS strings. |

Nashville's a "foodie town" and here's a good place to start looking around:

Don't think you would ever run out of great places to eat in Nashville..... even if you lived here. I go for Italian, so I like "Maggiano's Little Italy" or "Sole Mio" _________________ Jerry Jones |

Guys, appreciate the info! Darrell, as much as I like a good baloney sandwich, I'd kind of like to see my 30th. Mike, will definitely try and get to the Stage and hear you play. Jerry, Italian sounds good and the wife likes it, thanks! _________________ Zum StageOne

Dave:
They put a big slice of tomato and lettuce on their fried baloney sandwich, they also toast the bread with copious amounts of butter. I alway get mine with onion and a slice of cheese also. Currently they are running a special, the fried baloney sandwich with a Pabst Blue Ribbon beer for $5.
The music there is the best you will find in Nashville. I saw Mike Sweeney with Scott Icenogle last Tuesday, a really great show. |

Fried bologna or not, you have to go to Robert's. In my opinion, it's the only venue worth going to on Broadway. Once you get there, you'll know you made the right decision. _________________ Sierra Crown D-10 8+4, Sierra S-10 3+4, Carter D-10 8+7, Carter Starter 3+ a lot of engineering problems |

Well guys, just got back from a great trip to Nashville. That fried bologna sandwich must really be good. Robert's was so packed you couldn't get in there with a shoehorn, hopefully next time.
The Stage was great and Mike you couldn't seem to hit any notes (except the right ones!) How do you do that? And,my wife really got a kick out of bringing you your coffee. Don't think 29 years ago when we got married she thought she would be serving coffee in bar in Nashville. Looking forward to hearing you play again next time.
Thanks again for the suggestions. _________________ Zum StageOne

Dave:
You must have gone to Roberts at night on the weekend. I recommend going to listen to Scott Icenogle who plays every other Tuesday, he is probably the best for the really old stuff. He has a great band always with a fiddle, steel, and standup bass. Dave Tanner is also great but if I remember right doesn't always have a steel (he tends to like Carl Smith stuff). Rachel Hester (Hoot's daughter) has a great sound also and is not too crowded but hasn't had a steel when I listened.
Nashville on Broadway is a place you have to roam around a lot and you will occassionally find somebody really good, but a lot of people pretty bad.
Unfortunately, a lot of the audiences think old country is George Strait and Toby Keith and the really old country is Glen Campbell and John Denver. I like the really old stuff that people including myself haven't heard before (like Skeets McDonald, Faron Young, the ballads of Johnny Horton, Carl Perkins, Red Foley etc, old sounds of Ray Price, and best of all Johnny Paycheck before the beard and mustache). The stuff I like is rapidly becoming prehistory.
I hate it when bands play the overplayed songs of Patsy Cline (three famous songs which she also hated) and others over and over again.
People seem to really like the old type of night clubs like Roberts and Tootsies that aren't made anymore.
The owner of Roberts, Jesse Lee, has opened up a place close to opryland, The Nashville Palace, that has the old stuff, but it seems to be really struggling. Ike Jonson is the guy to hear there on Monday nights, a real historian of country music who feels country died in 1963.
Brazilbilly at Roberts on the weekend is a great show (a little bit too Rockabilly for me however). But the crowds are just unreal and growing.
Pearls at Fort Worth stockyards still has the old stuff but the best bands have disappeared from there also.
Would be interested in other people's perspectives. |

I caught Rachel at Robert's when I was there in July. She was great and had Chris Scruggs playing six string and non-pedal steel. I've never seen anyone bend behind the bar as well as he did. I would have never guessed he wasn't playing pedal steel. Also, I saw the Chris Casello Band there. He's a monster guitar player and knew his way around the steel pretty well too.
The Stage was the only other place on Broadway that I enjoyed. I went and saw the Eddie King band twice there.
I did not enjoy Tootsie's. They seemed to be after the same crowd Robert's has, but they just don't have the character. _________________ Sierra Crown D-10 8+4, Sierra S-10 3+4, Carter D-10 8+7, Carter Starter 3+ a lot of engineering problems |
