What type do you prefer?
PULL-THROUGH: Most older guitars are activated when a bell crank or rack is turned (by a crossrod) on a lever or pedal. The crank abuts up to a collar fixed on the pull (or push) rod which then moves the changer finger. (Examples are ShoBuds (rack/barrel), Push-Pulls, Zums w/ comb-bellcranks and Fessys).
The main benefit, is that you can use the same pullrod on an unlimited number of pedals/levers for a given string. Thus, you are not limited to 3R/2L
FIXED: This system directly fixes the pull rod to the bell crank, either by a setscrew or hooked pull rod end. e.g. Emmons LeGrande/ newer Zums, and ShoBud Pro III's etc.
This type of interface yields a stronger connection between bellcrank and pullrod, and is more compact. On the downside, you may be limited by the number of holes in the changer finger with respect to the number of changes or leverage options available.

Both on same PSGs, please
I modified some bellcrank couplings on my Dekley (origiginally FIXED) to work as PULL-THROUGH, to allow 2 (or more) pedals/levers to pull one rod. Works fine. Only disadvantage - if one can call it that - is that some changes must be adjusted along the pull-rod. |

You have left out the old system whereby you can fine tune the leverage at the crank and the finger by turning the threaded rod contacts higher or lower at both finger and crank. The rod length is adjusted by a turnbuckle.
But to answer your question, I prefer the Emmons push pull setup when they started connecting pull rods to the raise fingers with shock loop connectors rather than springs. _________________ Chris Lucker

Hey Chris, which guitars are you talking about? ..... ZB, Blanton? .......or something altogether different?
I consider the ZB interface to be "fixed", as there is no rod "pass-through" I'm not sure about the Blanton (is that the one that used a post for a bellcrank, and was infinitely adjustable). I think neither used rods slipping through the bell crank
Also guitars with "fixed" bellcrank connections that use swivels like GFI can be modded to "pass through" easily. |

I was referring to Blanton, but I have seen the same idea on a Wright someone rodded and Jerry Blanton explained how he used the idea to rod a Bigsby in 1960. _________________ Chris Lucker
