Hey Guys,

I'm doing a job on a steel soon and I would like to have two pickups wired in Series instead of Parallel using a standard 3-way switch.

Can someone please help with me with a diagram of two steel pickups (simple hot & ground) wired in Series with a 3-way switch (neck<both>bridge)?

Much appreciated,
Chris

Chris,

If I wanted to wire pickups, I might refer here:

https://www.google.com/search?q=electric+guitar+wiring+diagrams&rls=com.microsoft:en-US:IE-Address&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=Utk2UoW5L5XH4AO_x4GABg&ved=0CCsQsAQ&biw=1280&bih=578&dpr=1#imgdii=_

This one is for a 4 position, but would be easily adaptable by eliminating one function, bottom right corner.

Easy, you just need an ON-OFF-ON SPDT switch.

Connect the two pickups in series...... wire finish of pickup #1 to start of pickup #2.

Connect start of pickup #1 to one of the outside tabs of the switch.

Connect the finish of pickup #2 to the other outside switch tab.

Connect the common connection between the two pickups to the center tab of switch.

One of the outside tabs of the switch should be grounded and the other outside tab is your hot connection.

The switch is effectively shorting one of the pickups when in one of the outside positions. In the center position, there is no connection and both pickups remain ON and in series.

If your pickups are single coil, one of them will need to be RWRP (reverse wind/reverse polarity)..... the hum can be pretty annoying in the series position.

Thanks Dick and Jerry for the help.

Jerry that's just what I needed. I believe I tried the same technique once but with an on/on/on switch. Maybe that was the problem. Anyway, I picked up a nice switch from Radioshack earlier.

Thanks again,
Chris

Chris, you can use an ON-ON-ON switch if you have one. Connect the pickups together as above.

Common connection goes across both center tabs of the switch.

The hot/ground connections go to the diagonally opposed outside tabs..... the two tabs that are NOT connected internally when the switch is in the center position. The internal connection of the ON-ON-ON switch will depend on whether you have a type-1 or type-2. Test with your meter.
