Just got the mesa Studio pre and changed the v1 to a cleaner one!
But: still get distortion with gain above 1,5 when pushing the pedal! Absolutley no clean headroom and a very low signal out of it to record, even when master volume and output volumes set to max!
With a telly and light overdrive I like it, but with my Sho Buds I don't get it!!
For sure I use the rhythm Channel...!
What's to do???

Cheers from Germany

Guido

you probrably have a hot pickup on your guitar like a BL710. A lot of people have replaced the tubes with ones with a lower gain.

Although Paul Franklin says his preamp is stock and his pickups are BL710. I am not sure how his settings are. Maybe someone else can chime in here

It's a Sho Bud single coil.

Try playing it like Fender amp. Volume high on the amp, low on the volume pedal.
Also, you could take it to any qualified amp tech and tell him/her to modify the input "to be like the 2nd input on a silverface Fender". That`ll put a pad on the input and your pick up won`t overdrive the first tube too easily.

...a pad on the input sounds good!

What model of tube did you put in the V1 position?

Is it possible that the output of the preamp is overdriving the next device? What is the next device?

I put a 5751 Highgrade TAD Premium Selected in V1!
Today I used the mesa in front of a Nashville 112 - output into power amp in, this turned out much better with less grit on higher gain settings around 4!!
Maybe the preamp pushes the line input of my Steinberg into gritty distortion?! Although it doesn't sound like that and the peak led is off...!
Maybe I've to experiment a bit more!

Next thing: when I put a MXR delay between guitar and volume pedal, the signal gets much clearer and there is no loss in volume and highs through the pot pedal!
Buffer phenomen??
