I have this distortion noise. Reverb off, it's not there. I've clean and rotated pot a couple of times.
( spaying deox-it from front ).I've unpluged and repluged the unit to make sure connections are good. It's not full time, seems to come and go. Any ideas that may help? Thanks

The chronic problem with almost all NV 400's is the molex connector located under the chassis. As you probably already know, it connects your reverb tank to its circuitry.

It never was a good feature of what is otherwise, without question, a great amp. In fact, if something's acting up with the amp, it's probably either that connector or the jacks. I guess I oughtta know. I've played NV400's for 25 years and own 4 of them.

The solution? Clean the connectors. If possible try and carefully crimp the female end so that the resulting connection is tight. Some go so far as to solder the connections. If that doesn't do it then, yes, it could be something else, but I doubt it. In that unlikely case, send the chassis to Peavey. You'll get great service and a quick turnaround.
