I'll be looking at scruffy Vegas 400 with BW speaker for pretty cheap. What are the concerns with this amp?
Thanks

Has it ever been re-capped? If not, at about 35 years old, it's past due! Wink

A "scruffy" one, of questionable history, would be worth $150-$200, at most.

Scratchy pots, reverb issues, connectors etc, some possible dry solder joints around the output transistors heat etc...open er up and give it some TLC.

Watch those white Molex connectors - The contact of the post/barrel can be problimatic if the amp experiences wide temperature swings like we have up north where I live. You can crimp the split barrels so they are closed tighter or just solder the wires directly to the PCB if they continue to give you trouble.

It looks musty and non-abused. Servicing history is unknown. All of the controls work OK. It has what sounds like a speaker rub. The speaker is a Black Widow 1405 DT. The reverb strength seems a bit weak with only moderate effect at full clockwise rotation. A cab shake gives a pretty loud reverb boing.

Any advice on speaker rehab? Are the replacement spider kits OK? Disassemble and clean the foam goo first?

How strong should the reverb be on this amp? What are likely culprits and approach to repair of the reverb?

What are specifics of appropriate routine servicing on this amp? I have lots of experience working with hand wired tube amps but very little with solid state and PCB.

Thanks
Jim

Peavey reverbs have always disappointed.
Some improvement occurs with swapping to 3 springs and long delay tank.
As it has almost 30 years on it, you might want to recap: it also benefits from upgraded IC chips.

Geez Larry you make it sound like the guy should pay for someone to take it off his hands instead of the guy being insulted with an offer of $150-$200.

The going rate used if it works for the Vegas,Nashville and sessions for the longest time has been $300 and is a bargain at that price and really a bargain if you get it for less.
The Vegas is the best bargain of the lot if you are a 2 instrument guy because of the built in 2 separate preamps with differing EQ.

The Vegas 400 was my favorite steel amp for a long while, during the period when I was still lifting full-size amps. In fact, the whole Johnny Bush front line (me, Ricky Turpin, and JB) used V4's. We bought spares, in fact.

If you're into the big cabinet sound (and heft), I think the Vegas is a great amp, even if you have to put some catch-up maintenance bucks into it.

FWIW, for me nowadays it's a NV112 with a Telonics TSNEO 12-4 speaker.

I prefer the two spring reverb over the three spring reverb in Peavey amps. I have both. I have tried about a half dozen digital reverb pedals and racks, and I always end up getting rid of the digital crap and going back to using the two spring reverb in my Peavey Session 400. It's just what sounds best to me.

I recently bought one off the forum. I spruced up the Tolex, cleaned the pots and replaced the BW1502 speaker with a SICA Neo I had lying around, just to reduce the weight. Anybody wanna buy a NV1000 or Evans FET500?

@ Stuart ...Jim asked; What to look out for. These are common issues with peavey amps. They are also pretty inexspensive maintenance/repairs... Tell the man how it is up front so when he's buying, he has answers not questions, is the safest way known as Pre-purchase research.

Larry it wasn't that what you said wouldn’t be helpful, it was what you didn't say.
You’ll have to admit that just like the previous posts by others it wasn’t exactly dripping with encouragement.

I asked a similar question a while back. Ken Fox offered some very detailed information: http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=237926&highlight=
