I live in Michigan. Any opinions on whether taking a motor trip to Nashville with $3000 would be the best option to finding and buying a quality S10? Maybe spend a couple of days down there. _________________ Carter SD10

Before you travel, you may want to check out the inventory at Steel Guitar Nashville, or give them a call and see what they have in stock so you can play a few. https://www.steelguitar.net/index.html However, to me the live music out on the town is definitely worth the road trip. |

Al Brisco (Colborne, Canada) is not so far too and he could have nice opportunities. Depend where you live in Michigan.. _________________ Mullen G2 SD10/Schild SD10/Nash400/lemay mod/Emminence neo speaker/Brad Sarno "tonic preamp"/Strymon bluesky/Telonics volume/Tonealigner pickup/ http://www.pedalsteel.fr |

Personally, I don't think it would be worth the trip if you are just expecting to go to a couple of stores in hopes of finding a steel. The only store that deals in pedal steels is Steel Guitar Nashville. When I was in there earlier this summer they only had 5 used guitars on the floor and no new steels in stock. |

Dale, you could come over to my house in Manchester. I'll sell you one for less than 3000. I'm about halfway between Ann Arbor and Jackson. Call me if you want to; 734-428-9206. |

Contact Bobby Reed in Hendersonville before to go.
He always has a pretty good inventory of used steels.
Lots of info on here. http://www.bobbyreed.net/ _________________ aka "Lucky Kay"--Custom built Rittenberry SD10 3X5, Walker S/S, NV-112, and Hilton Pedal |

Don't forget, ANY excuse to go to Nashville is a good one. Dont they make Williams over in Vermont, isn't that a suburb of Michigan. And Billy Coopers ? The shopping is more fun than the buying. |

Travelling and buying a guitar are two very distinct activities. Combining them certainly could be fun, but not necessarily the most productive or economical way to buy a guitar. (Nashville has its charms, including the Gibson store in the Opry Mall, if it's still there).
Buying a guitar involves research, much of which can be done online. Once you're ready to see and touch them (potential buyer stage), travelling to a store is a prudent move (as opposed to buying on spec on line).
Al Brisco (like others) has a nice web site with info re the actual guitars available for purchase. Calling the store ahead of time is also a wise move.
If you do go to Al's, try to avoid driving thru Toronto during rush hour (seriously!)
just my 2 cents worth... |

Between Ebay, Craigslist and the steel guitar forum, i have found many options to buy pedal steels, but there is nothing better than playing the instrument and getting the feeling that this is the one. i recently spent hours in the acoustic guitar room at Guitar Center playing everything on the wall before finding an inexpensive Seagull that hit the sweet spot. I have my eye out for one of those newish GFI Ultras. No more student models, I want one of the "grownups". The fun is also in the hunt. Thanks for all of your "hunting tips! _________________ Carter SD10

Personally I would buy a steel here on the forum. I have bought many over the years and 95% of them were just like new.
Nashville is an Ok place for a trip but I would never expect to find a steel there on any given day.

after all of these posts i believe its best to save my gas money and "let my fingers do the walking" ..in the steel guitar forum. and put the trip down there for my bucket list. it would be nice to hear some authentic country music down there, though. _________________ Carter SD10

I buy or trade some good guitars overseas (Lyon, France) and I've never had any problems with the forum. So I think from the U.S. mainland is more reliable. Like me you can get many tips from excelent sellers here. I listen and ask a lot of advice, it's wonderfull for a French player. As you can understand it takes a lot of confidence to do that, for the moment no problems, knock on wood. Take your time, ask good pics as clean as possible with outdoor light and good resolution. In my opinion for a distance buying it's often better to buy a guitar for which you know the problems (and you know they could be solved) than a guitar with hidden problems. If your in Nashville check out Mike Siler at Legends Corner on Wednesday. Has Cookie Jones on steel, Johnny Lee Carpenter on Fiddle, Roy Cook jr. on Guitar. Can't rememeber the drummer and Bass players names but !st class really tight band. They play real country music and some western swing _________________ Daniel J. Cormier
