This guy is absolutely one of the most recorded steel guitarist in history! If you listen to the radio from the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s and even today you will hear this man play steel guitar!
Oh and for what it is worth he is a class act and gentleman. I sincerely hope he receives this honor someday soon.

It's totally asinine that Sonny is not in there. He should have been inducted a LONG time ago. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . I like the way you say it Richard! I think these "glaring omissions" should be pointed out. I seriously would challenge someone to just take a look at the Musician's Union records on how many sessions this man has done. Sonny may not be a player's play per se. But let me tell you something, he has put steel guitar on the map in many ways! I can confidently tell you that I know artists who have said to me, "I don't like steel guitar, but I sure like what Sonny does". Also, I know session players (on other instruments) who talk about the genius of this man when it comes to recording sessions. Clearly, he should have been in the SGHOF about 20 years ago! _________________ Zane King

In 1983, I was in Nashville with my band and we recorded 2 songs there. One of the guys from the booth (I'm assuming, the producer) asked me if I could play the intro, solo, and ending to one of the songs, identically a second time. He didn't tell why until after we finished. I play that song the same way every time we played it, so it was no problem. After we were done with that song, they played it back, and they used both tracks. He then told me that he had worked some with Sonny, and on a lot of sessions, Sonny would double track his parts for a fuller, richer, chorusy sound. He mentioned Sonny was his favorite steel player to work with.
One thing that also puzzles me is, why isn't Sonny playing the convention every year. Is he not liked by the IGSC board? That could also explain his exclusion from the hall of fame. Of course, maybe he just doesn't want to play at the convention. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . Sonny Garrish for SGHOF, yep! You'll get no argument from me! Been saying that for years myself.
Lets not read anything untoward into why Sonny never does the ISGC though. Id guess the reasons are that 1. He's a pretty humble fellow... and 2. He's probably just too busy. He's still the workin'est steel player I know |

Sonny is another guy who made me want to play steel. I listened to his steel work on records by the Judds in the eighties, and he also played steel on Shania Twain's first record in 1993, and he's also featured on quite a few Kenny Chesney records-he plays the fast solo on "She's Got It All", which appeared on Kenny's 1996 record "Me And You" and several other records by Kenny. He also played the great steel on Chalee Tennison's song "Just Because She Lives There" in 1999. |

All Sonny has done is record for the last 40 years plus television apperances as well. He has played on countless artists records from country to gospel. If anyone is worth of such an honor it has to be Sonny Garrish. I understand he is a first class gentleman and does not even have a computer so he never sees what we say about him. Hopefully 2014 will be his year to enter the Hall Of Fame. |

I couldn't have put it better myself, Richard
I couldn't begin to say how much Sonny's recording work has expanded my own personal vocabulary on the instrument, but it is substantial, and I am solidly in his debt as a player. |

What's taking so long is, Sonny is so underground they can't find a likeness of him to put on the HOF plaque.. |

I was surprised - I thought he was inducted years ago.
Instructions for nominating someone can be found here: www.scottysmusic.com/abouthof.htm
The Steel Guitar Forum is not directly associated with the SGHOF. Posting about someone on the Forum does not place their name into nomination. For every inductee, there was someone who cared enough to make a nomination. It's a lot more work than posting on the Forum. _________________ -𝕓𝕆𝕓- (admin) - Robert P. I have a hard time believing that he was never nominated. The forum is just a place to vent about it. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . Thanks gentlemen for responding to the thread. bOb, just like you I actually went back through all of those who have been inducted to just to make sure he wasn't already there. Thus, it surprised me just a bit. I do know about the nomination process and I appreciate you pointing that out here because likely many do not understand that. Yet like Richard suggests, the Forum does serve as a place to vent somewhat and to also bring light on to some things that might need to be addressed in the future.
Kind regards,

Sonny has played some great stuff on many artists albums. Besides Supernaw (and I am going to forget many, I am sure), he used to play some killer stuff on some of Gene Watson's songs, Red Stegall, The Judds, oh, I could go on and on, but I am tired and need to go bed. One of my absolute favorites is Sara Evans' "No Place That Far" album.
EDIT: Just for fun, I went to allmusic.com and searched on Sonny. Here is a link to the page showing a lot of his credits.

Holy crap, Richard. That is an incredible list. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. I really enjoyed Sonny's column articles , "Studio Steel", in those issues of Steel Guitarist Magazine. That's how I became aware of Sonny's work but also how I learned to work the Nashville numbers ("I never Promised You a Rose Garden")
And how! |

One of the top players for years, absolutely needs to be in the SGHOF. I also thought he was already inducted.

I know I post the same messages about some who are not yet inducted. It is a process of nominating. What we post on here may alert the board of our feelings but unless we submit a nominating letter or E-mail and follow the process they can not vote on the candidate. Quite simple really. I'm sure if it was up to Scotty and the committee they would put in 15 a year. But this is a non profit fuction supported only by donations and fund raisers. The cost of the plaques alone is right up there. We shouldn't act like the committee doesn't know who the worthy candidates are. They await yours and my nominations thru the established process to vote on.I'm sure they go also by the amount of nominations submitted. I wouldn't want the job because it seems like a thankless one, Damned if you don't Damned if you do. Please don't nominate me I can't even tune the darn thing. With all that said I hope the very next two inducted are Jim and Sonny ..

Real good point Joe. But like I said, it's hard to believe that in all this time, that Sonny has not been nominated at least once, and inducted as a result. But again, as Barry mentioned, Sonny really does lay low and is not in the spotlight much. But if someone has the knowledge enough to be on the board, then they will know good and well who Sonny is. Hard to speculate on why he isn't in yet. Just hope it happens while he can still enjoy the moment. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . Some of my favorite stuff from Sonny was done on 2 Red Stegall albums (yes vinyl) I used to have. Texas Red was one and I forget the title of the other. I loaned them to a student many years ago, along many other albums, and he left town without returning them and leaving no trace as to his whereabouts. Of course the albums are out of print. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . You can hear Sonny playing C6 on Red Steagal's "Lone Star Beer (& Bob Wills Music)" hit from the mid 70s. Great stuff. Sonny has played on soooooo many hit records. His playing is great and so is he, the man. Very innovative and accurate in the studio, he's a producer's dream player. Without question... Sonny Garrish should be in the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame !!! |
