Topic: What does Golf and Steel Guitar have in common? |

Nothing.  I am sure some of you first thought that so I went ahead and said it. Seriously, it occurs to me that there are some comparisons that are interesting and just fun to think about.
A while back I wrote a thread entitled "There Are No Fans Of Steel Guitar". Turns out, "There Are No Fans of Golf" either. No no no! Not just because it is one of the hardest and most frustrating games on the planet. What I mean by that is that the fans of golf are all golfers! Every one in the audience at the Masters tournament are all at least novice golfers and many of them are actually very good. Each move the professional makes is studied and calculated by countless would be professionals. They want to know everything the pro does right down to the color of their shoelaces (as this might make a difference with the peripheral view). HA! Thus this is true in the steel guitar world that the color of a thumb pick would make a measurable difference. Yellow picks by the way does increase speed. LOL.
So as I thought more about this the more I realized that I'm all worked up about steel guitar artists not really having fans. Now, I'm sure there are exceptions here and there. Occasionally people do like steel guitar music without even knowing what the A/B pedals are for. It does happen. As I guess, there are few people in the world who watch golf that might not even know what the difference is between an L wedge and a 9 iron. It happens. Still, this all makes me feel better now. I read threads here on the Forum and see posts on FB that talk about the popularity of the steel, the future of the instrument, on and on. I think it helps us to understand that what we need to recruit in order for us to experience growth for the instrument is players. More players. That's what we need. Because players are the market. This is the world of golf too. People who hack away or even scratch the round make up the golf community/market.
Now I'm sure some of you are saying, well Zane you should have already known this. Well, I have known this for awhile but truth is because of all the talk about "growth" and "popularity" I just thought maybe the steel guitar might have a few "fans". Now again folks I know there are some mild exceptions here and there but for the most part it's all us pickers who love this. And I love each and everyone of you! Whenever I play steel guitar shows I just love watching every player I can. It doesn't matter how good they may or may not be. I always find something I can "steel" from them.
Lastly, it also occurred to me that to play the steel guitar it also takes the ability similar to the execution of the perfect golf swing. I bet it won't take you long to figure out which I am the best at...steeling or golfing?

| I've never played golf, but after finding a golf club(a wood) a few yrs ago, I TEED up a ball just to see what I could do. I smacked that ball straight as an arrow, and never picked the club ever again............. Unfortunately, Pedal Steel didn't work out the same, cause nobody sets down to one of these, and hits it straight as an arrow on the very first swing. After 40yrs. I'm still plugging away, and it's way more fun than golf. Oh, I do enjoy watching a golf match, but have absolutely no desire to play. |

If steel guitar was a sport, it would be called golf. Every time you correct one thing you are doing wrong, you develop another bad habit. But, what a great instrument.  |

| What do golf and steel guitar have in common? If you do bad you can only blame yourself and they both can frusturate you. However, a steel guitar sure sounds better and you are not going to throw your back out by swinging it but you can carrying it. They both have hazards too. |

Golf & steel have a lot in common.
Composure. "Proper" technique. Ability to navigate changing terrain and make the right shot or sound thru distractions. You don't hit a golf ball as hard as you can and you don't pick the strings as hard as you can. It takes finesse. or at least it should IMHOP.

A graphite driver just lets me smack the ball farther into the woods....
What could I say about a graphite steel guitar deck?
Hitting a golf ball looks, at first glance, like it should be as easy as falling off a log. It ain't.

I work at a golf course, the boss allows me to keep a steel there to practice on during slack times, when golfers walk in they will look at the steel and ask "whats that". I agree that golf and steel playing has much in common.

Golf and steel have many things in common .
First tee at Augusta National or the stage of the Grand Ole Opry.
The tools or clubs for various shots and the strings amps and effects you bring to a gig or session.
Greats start at an early age as Tiger,Phil,Rory or Buddy,Tommy,Zane.
Some bring it from the range to the course or from the house to the stage and some cannot.
Hours and hours of practice.
You need a patient wife and family.
Some players teach and some play.
There is a joke somewhere about God and a 1 iron and the steel.
Golf is game for life like the steel.
