I'm using an old Harmony Soveriegn guitar with an extention nut as an "acoustic lap steel." I'm using Elixer Medium acoustic strings on it tuned to open D and a Lace soundhole pickup. It's a little crude, but with a little boost from a comp pedal it works pretty well. The problem is getting the pickup close enough to the strings. I've got pieces of cork to raise the pickup as far as I can get it.
What are other people using for soundhole pickups that can be adjusted closer to the strings? I know Sunrise pickups are popular with Weissenborn type guitars, but they're a bit out of my price range at the moment.
Do you think I'd get better results with electric guitar strings? |

You might get better bass response with nickel wound.
As a different take on it, I use a $60 craigslist Stratoclone (a Washburn Lyon).
I'm thinking about a Martin backpacker. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)
More amps than guitars, and not many effects |

For pickup of acoustic instruments not already wired I generally use an Audio Technica 3000 series wireless body-pack and cardioid lavaliere mic. About $500 new for the entire kit, it clips right onto the sound hole or bridge piece with a bit of foam or cloth to protect the wood. |

I only paid $125 for the guitar... |

I cut off the fretboard tabs from the pickup with a dremel saw, smoothed off the stubs with a mill file, pulled the last 2 frets out of the fretboard of my Harmony Stella, and attached the pickup to the fretboard with double-sided tape. |
