I am looking for a more gradual taper on the tone control of my PP Emmons.
I use my tone control and it seems touchy like you turn and nothing happens till I hit a spot that is a small touchy area that is too sensitive.
So I looked at the cap and it is a small tan ceramic disk that says 5032 12v.
Also has a fine crack to boot.
What say you O wise ones. _________________ MSA 12 String E9th/B6th Universal.

It sounds like both the pot and the cap need to be replaced, a forum search will reveal the proper values of each and how to go about replacing them. |

I think that cap probably says 503Z, not 5032. 503 is the coding for .05 mF. Z indicates tolerance, +80%, -20%.
But the problem you describe sounds to me as though it's the pot, not the cap. Could be the pot is broken, but also could be that the taper just isn't to your liking.
I've seen ceramic disc caps have a crack from bending the leads, but I've never seen one fail. And if it did, I think it would just not work at all. Just my personal experience and opinion--others more expert may have better input. |

Thanks you guys yeah 503Z it is.
The pot doesn't crackle and I think it could be just the combination of the parts. "The way it was built"
I have seen this in Telecasters and it is the reason I like my new Tele. The vol. and tone controls work really well. New Teles have diffrent pots and roll off very nice and clean.
How does this relate to a Steel pick up and the symptoms I am describing above?
I just want it to work smoother.
Taken from the Tele forum.
" The tone control should be a logarithmic pot of 250k. If the value is too great then most of the effect is indeed at the bottom of the knob.
The tone pot is not a potentiometer (pot) but a variable resistor (rheostat) in series with a capacitor, the inductance of the pickup is very important to the effect - it is a RLC circuit. At 250k the effect is above the register of the guitar to all practical purposes it is open circuit. The control begins to take effect at around 100k. This would be just below 5 on a linear 250k pot, or around 8 on a log 250k, lower on a log 500k. The place for using log 500k pots in in a 2+2 control circuit where they are used in parallel (also note that humbuckers have double the inductance)." _________________ MSA 12 String E9th/B6th Universal.
