I have a Recording King lap steel. It is the first and only lap steel I have ever played. I play in C6 tuning. Not having any experience playing other brands, I can't compare it to anything. But as someone who has been playing it for 3 years, I am happy enough with it. The quality of design and components seem pretty decent. It has an alnico pickup that provides a good variety of tone through my 30w Fender amp. I think it's a fine guitar as a starter, or for a extra guitar in a different tuning. But someday soon I would like to get a classic vintage Rick, or Fender, or ??

I owned one of the RG-31 lap steels (the matte mahogany model) and thought it was a very decent instrument for the price. If I kept it I probably would have experimented with a different pickup. It's certainly a good choice for someone starting out or on a budget.
