I have a Tech Question, Regarding "Downloading Archived Concerts."
I want to start downloading archived concerts.
I have only been listening to streams, until now.
I will be new to this, so the tech. choices for downloading are new also.
I am not certain as to which filetype I should download.
Here are the choices I will have on this site.
The entire show:
64 kps MP3 / ZIP (80.3 M)
VBR MP3 / ZIP (232.8 M)
Ogg Vorbis
Lossless Zip
which one is best? Better sound?
64 kps MP3 / ZIP (80.3 M)
or
VBR MP3 / ZIP (232.8 M)
Individual Songs:
Ogg Vorbis
64 kps MP3
VBR MP3
Shorten
Those are the choices. Not sure which file I should download.
I'm currently using my Verizon service, for the Internet.
4G LTE via my Jetpack Mobile Hotspot.
Hope you can help, as I want to download some great shows. NRPS will be the 1st show I download.
Data usage, is an issue...as I am on a data plan.
18 MB, or I get charged a fee.
I believe MP3 is fairly light on data. Is this correct?
Below, is the website for the archived concerts.
This one, many steel players will like. Buddy Cage with New Riders, 1973.

MP3 has many different rates of compression. 64kps is a very low standard, so I would skip that one. VBR stands for variable bit rate - it changes compression depending on how dense the music is. I am not sure if there is a standard for this, but I do not think anyone is likely to be able to detect any difference between VBR mp3 and a WAV file(what regular CD's use) on all but the finest studio equipment and listening conditions. At one time some mp3 players could not handle VBR, but I think anything these days can. If you are using old equipment, download one and try it. But that may be an argument for an equipment upgrade, not downloading to a lower standard!
Ogg Vorbis I've only recently heard of, but it is an alternate means of compression to mp3. If you think about it, mp3 is now almost 20 years old -ancient as far as digital media compression goes. Orbis is supposedly better than MP3 at similar compression rates, but above 128kps few can tell any difference.
I do not know what, if anything, one needs to play ogg orbis files.
Lossless Zip is what it says - a means of transmitting a file that theoretically has no loss.
I would choose VBRmp3 if you just want a quick good-quality answer. If you want to research, perhaps ogg orbis might be a good alternative. Do your players handle this format? You could download one and try....
Lossless Zip would be very high quality (possibly a much higher standard than the recording equipment/setup of a live show provides), but I already have a terrabyte hard drive with all my music, and another backing it up. I don't want to increase file size.... I don't think that even the experts could hear the difference on MY stereo equipment! I have upped my preferred MP3 bit rate to 160 or better, but I have some at only 96 that friends gave me that sound fine. 64 does not, though. And, to be honest, 128 sounds fine to me.

Thanks very much, Douglas !
I really appreciate your help with this. I will take your advice & try the VBR MP3. After I have downloaded, I will post to tell you how everything went.
Thanks again! _________________ David "DJ" Rupert

The .mp3 format was originally developed as a proprietary format for the Motion Picture industry. There were concerns by some people that could lead to a pay per use situation so Ogg Vorbis was developed as a Free and Open alternative. Both have the potential for high quality sound. Ogg Vorbis is widely used in the computer gaming world. Here's more about it than most anyone would want to know:

I use both. Like Douglas said, VBR is usually the way to go. Since you are just getting started, you might want to take the time to try a little bit of everything available and see what works for you.
