Well, I bought one, planning to use it with my Weissenborn. It didn't work so well...If you want to try one, I'll look around and see if I can find it, and send it to you. It's definitely a "try before you buy" item. |

I got one of those bars from Bob Allen when I bought a Melbert lap steel from him last year. It had a great feel to it and was easy to hold, but it was just a bit to light.
I read a posting on this site a few months ago that these bars were not being made anymore. I'm not sure about it, but there was some question that came up about it. _________________ "Shoot low boys, the're ridin' Shetlands" |

Jay's web site www.stoneslides.com is still active. I just phoned and left a message asking for a clarification on the status of his slide business and let him know it would be a good idea to check in here at the forum to confirm or deny that he's still alive and kickin' |

Thanks for the heads up, Bob! And to clarify any misinformation, I am still in business making Clay Rabbit Pottery and Paloma Stone Slides.
What might have lead to the confusion is that from June to September, the Clay Rabbit Pottery side of the business exhibits at a number of juried art events all over the west. So far this summer we were in Bellevue, WA, Bozeman, MT, Jackson, WY, Edmonds, WA, Wallowa Lake, OR, and we will soon be in Issaquah, WA.
While traveling, I often have been plagued with difficulty in getting access to my email accounts. Upon returning home from a trip last night, I found over 250 email messages! I can't respond to anyone if I don't know you've tried to contact me! As for phone messages... we live out in the country and do not have phone service that records messages, or forwards calls. So I have not been able to respond if you have called. There are 42 phone messages on our little digital phone message recorder.
SO... I hope the purchase of a fancy new smart phone will help solve all these problems. My grandson assures me that he'll teach me how to operate the thing.
Thanks again to the players who keep Paloma slidin' along.

I am glad I am now retired. I heard this a thousand times before. Whenever anything goes wrong. It's always someone else fault. _________________ "Shoot low boys, the're ridin' Shetlands" |

My latest Paloma order came through within one week. I had explained to Jay that I had to borrow my wife's new Paloma slide to ship with a new lap steel and I needed to put it back before she noticed it was missing. She caught me putting it back. Oh well, some days are like that. |

Hi Jay,
your tone bars are always with me, day and night, and they are the best thing that could happen to me and help me in my way of playing the steel : thanks again and all the best!

My wife ordered one of his bars for my Christmas stocking in early November. Hearing nothing from him, but getting the PayPal receipt, she asked him what's up. The last she heard was that it'd be ready in another 10 days or so. That was about a month ago. If I ever do get it, it'll be my second bar of his which I really like. But it will definitely be my last.... |

I made an order from Jay over the phone two months ago... no bars yet. My CC was not charged. I'm guessing that the other side of the business has proven more profitable.
I prefer the stone bars because 1.) they're big and 2.) they're light. You will notice a small tone difference, especially in the bass strings... for me, the difference was not enough to outweigh the advantages.
I have an 80-year-old steel buddy... he was unable to play anymore until I gave him one of my bars... it really turned him around. One advantage he pointed out to me... they're not absolutely slick, so they're easy to pick up and control.
I have broken one bar... it dropped on concrete, and broke on the second bounce! If Jay is not going to pick up this business I may offer to take it off of him... he wasn't in Dallas this year, I don't expect him in 2014.
If you get the chance, buy several... they were only 20$ a piece... I bought four, down to two now. _________________ New FB Page: Lap Steel Licks And Stuff: https://www.facebook.com/groups/195394851800329 |

I have a couple of Jay's bars in different diameters and lengths along with some of his slides. I much prefer the blue cobalt glaze to the white.
Light weight, very easy to hold and manipulate. An excellent bar all the way around. As Stephen said, a bit of a difference in the bass registers (more noticeable in Open E or G, not noticeable in C6). |
