I have a Zum SD 10 and a BJS John Hughy bar. The strings rattle against the bar on some frets especially on the first fret. It has never been a problem before now. What am I doing wrong? Thanks |

I used to have that problem on the 1st 3 frets. I was told by a PRO player that I need to put more pressure with the bar on the strings. I did, and that solved the problem. _________________ Mullen G2 SD10 3 & 5 The Eagle

Billy, It occurs mostly on the 1st fret and is due to uneven height of the strings. Higher bar pressure usually solves the problem. However, If the rollers are gauged to the string thickness it is possible to bring all the strings up level. This is what I do on the steels that I build. It works good. _________________ BenRom Pedal Steel Guitars

If, per chance, someone has had the rollers off the guitar for
cleaning/lubricating and were not aware that the ten rollers
have different sized grooves (I believe Bruce uses three
different groove depths) then reassembled them randomly,
it would compound your problem.

Russ Wever has the answer to your problem. If the rollers have been removed, cleaned and lubed about the time the problem started. The rollers were not replaced in original order. Check the rollers on the side, I have seen some large diameter rollers with numbers stamped their side. If not, It will take a dial caliper and a calculator to measure strings and rollers and to get them back in order. Use half the diameter of the roller and the strings diameter to figure its place on the guitar. Good Luck in finding the problem and a cure. |

BJS John Hughey bars are lighter weight than standard bars. I'd try a heavier bar before making alterations to the guitar, rollers, et. al. Just a thought. _________________ Clinesmith consoles D-8/6 5 pedal, D-8 3 pedal & A25 Frypan, Pettingill Teardrop, & P8 Deluxe. |
