Any suggestions greatly appreciated !!!!!!I have an 80xl to try out...first impression is that its harsh, maybe brittle???...spring reverb setting seems to distort @ higher setting under slightly aggressive picking.Delay is great for me as are the other effects I use from time to time(chorus,phase)..Really wanted to like this amp.from the reviews,it seemed like it could be the end of a search for me.something self-contained,light weight..something that would be equally @ home with the steel & my Teles... but I don't know if this is gonna work out or not...Playing a Rains SD10 with stock pickup using the JC 120 & the Black Panel settings...is it just me????

Bob I own two 80xl's and play a Rains and a GFI thru them. The Rains has great tone. The GFI is a little brittle with old strings on strings 3 & 4. Other than that. No harshness.

Which channel are you running in? If any other than the default JC Clean, make sure your gain control is ho higher than about 9 o'clock if you don't want distortion.

I run two of them in parallel and they work fantastic for me.

All the talk about the Roland 80XL has my interest peaked. If someone decides they don't want theirs, I'm open to early Christmas presents (or late birthday, your pick!).

Seriously, interest is peaked, especially when some said it sounded better than a Nashville 112 (which sounds pretty good in my book).

Welcome aboard Jim...it'll be nice to compare notes...the amp sure does seem to be held in high regard.size is great, weight & features excellent...just different from what I've been used to so I guess it'll take me some time.as I mentioned @ the beginning, this is only my second day with it & it was a work day...it's got a three day weekend ahead of it so hopefully, some playin time alone and then maybe use it @ Church Sunday a.m. then later for band rehearsal...

So far I've mainly used it for jazz guitar, but have tried it once at home with steel. When I find some settings worth sharing, I'll certainly be happy to do so.

Here is what works well for both my Mullen and my Williams. Both have single-coil pickups.

JC Clean

Bass: 2 o'clock to 3 o'clock
Middle: 10 o'clock
Treble: 10 o'clock
Presence: 7 o'clock to 9 o'clock

Bright: OFF

Plate Reverb: 3 o'clock (I don't care for the Spring Reverb on this amp.)

If I use any delay, it's very subtle. The default delay time is about twice as long as I like, so I try to tap in a beat that's twice the speed of the blinking light. ---> Click Here

I hope this helps.

I'm on the way to having the tone I was lookin for...a question about the reverb on this amp,,,plate seems to definitely sound better but on either the spring or plate,i seem to hear little reverb effect coming on until you start getting a ways up into the settings(halfway or so).Is this normal or do I have an issue that needs to be corrected (sent back & exchanged)...just wonderin ??? I've had amps with reverb, spring or digital just that seemed to vary in the amount or depth of the effect.just wanted to get an opinion on whether this is just a characteristic of this amp.

Bob, my spring reverb starts to be noticeable around the 9 o'clock position and that plate reverb around 2 o'clock.

Bob as to your reverb question. Reverb is a matter of personal taste AND the particular style of music in my opinion.

For Bakersfield sound I like more reverb and for what I call Nashville I use less reverb.

When playing my GFI to much reverb is very noticeable, however the Rains with the 705 pup is very forgiving Very Happy .

Enjoy the Cube....oh yea and if you ever have the opportunity try two of them at the same time and tweak the setting using all of the available modeling....it's a blast Mr. Green

Just an aside on this amp--at our gig last night we did Boot Scootin Boogie as usual, but this time I thought I'd pull out all the stops and do the grunge guitar (with my Derby SD-10). Earlier in the day I switched the Cube 80XL to lead and turned the modeling control to "extreme". I played around with different gain settings for a while and when I finally got it right I saved the settings in the solo mode. (My wife wanted to know what the heck all that noise was)
When it was time to do the song I just switched the amp to "lead" and hit the solo button. It worked out perfect--sounded like the record.
This amp is just plain fun!

I've been playing through it all morning with my hollow-body jazz guitar and loving it. A touch of both reverb and slapback on the clean channel and it's lovely.

Gonna spend some time with it on steel this afternoon too...

Well,i've some time with it & was given some settings the other day...I'm really glad I got this amp.I sold my Session 400 a while ago.been using a Blue Stripe era Peavey Bandit(my poor man's Nashville 112)...running into both from my Goodrich 120,it's going to work out great for gigs where I may need "a little more"...found also, that my steel setting works out pretty good for my Tele,i just switch from the JC to the black panel...thanks to everyone who has posted !

OK, I'm really lovin' this amp for steel too today. Here are my current settings (using the clean channel)

B: 3 o'clock
M: 12
T: 12
P: 11

Delay: 10 (a little slapback added)
Plate Reverb: 3

Sounds great to me, at least in my practice room. Will likely try it on a small-room gig or one where the amps are miked.

I have been using my cube 80 for steel and guitar at low and loud gigs. For no more than they cost and as lite as they are I don,t think they can be beat. They can be harsh if your not careful with your settings.I think I,m going to try something called beam blockers. They go in front of your speaker and cut down on the highs a bit.I think you can use and old cd by just setting it on your grill cloth with velcro or something.I saw a video and they suggested an old Debbie Gibson cd of somekind.I also used an extra cab and it sounded even better but then you could just take a twin.

I just realized that, at 80 watts, this is the same wattage as my Peavey 112 amp so it should be able to handle all the same types of gigs I use that for.

I tried the cd trick and it works pretty well.I laid a cd right in the center of the grill cloth and it made the mids and highs sound better.I,m going to put it on with double sided tape.I may try an old 45 record also but I don,t think she was recording back then.

Jim I have used my roland at some pretty loud gigs both miked and not miked. Its plenty loud but I think you may need another cab if your not miked.Just my opinion. I think I want two of the rolands just in case. With two you have 160 watts with the weight split in half.Let me put this another way,I,m tired of toting my 65 twin.

Beam blockers work great for these amps though there's a cheaper alternative. Try placing a CD on the outside of the grille with a light tape in front of the center of the cone. If you like it you can attach it from the inside. I really like mine with a beam blocker on it. Some people use an old 45 record as well.
