I remember when I first started playing a pedal steel 1979 I went to a Scotty's and Winnie Winston seminar in Indpls Indiana. I Think both of them touched on the fact a lot of Steeler's ride the 3rd and 5th string..Winnie more than Scotty ,that helped me a lot. Well, I work a basic 3 x 4 and so I use slants and work that 7 string raise a bit , a lot as a pre-bend. I think working those lower strings gives a great sound, especially as you go up those frets, stuff you can really chew on. You'll get no gruff from me, just more worms.
