Hi all, I just bought a 93 Emmons LeGrade II. A big move up from my Carter Starter. I'm 5'8 1/2. can't reach the 5th knee lever. Tom Brandshaw can put a extention on it. Or Emmons can cut the legs and rods 1inch.

with shoes on I measured my "Floor to thigh (right at cabinet). 23"
Distance from thigh to Cabinet- 3"
Seat is standard 20" height.

Cost for new legs and rods $325.00
Cost for cuting $60.00
Cost for extention 0

It seams 1" shorter would be best for playing possition. ?

Just my opinion. If your forearms are level with the top of the guitar and comfortable, I would go with the extension. If you are having to angle your forearms up to the top of the guitar, and it is uncomfortable, and possibly making it difficult to palm block, I would explore the shorter leg/rod ideas.

Also, I would explore more local folks to do the work rather than send the legs and rods to Emmons. It make take them a while to get it done and back to you.

I made an extension to lower my Emmons LKV to the exact perfect level, out of a block of wood.
It is currently attached with hose-clamps that are padded with a small piece of foam so they don't scratch the lever (I got the foam in the kids/crafts section of Target, it comes in a sheet that looks like a dinner place-mat).
It's basically a prototype to get the size correct. I hope to make a nicer one someday but this one works pefectly.
I drilled 3 holes right next to each other, then filed them smooth to create two slots a few inches apart on the wood block.
The wood block is the same width as the knee lever (think "Jenga!").
Slip the hose clamps through the slots and over the lever, tighten 'em up and you're good to go.

Forearms are level. That is my main concern here. proper position.
I can have Tom Bradshaw add extension.
Thanks for the replys.

Jeff, if your LII is a SD-10? I have 3 rod's that are one inch under.Sorry can't help with the legs. If you are a friend have a pipe cutter and vise. The legs are no big deal to cut down. Just a thought.

I have a friend who is in the process of buying an Emmons LeGrande II with 1" shorter legs. Would you be interested in trading legs?

well..there ya go!

otherwise, pull your seating position right up under the steel , wear boots with tall heels, find the best way to extend your up lever down by wrapping it with something or adjusting it or designing a better shaped lever. the older zums have a great shape for the vertical lever.

Thanks for all the replys. I believe my main question was answered. I am comfortable with forearms parallel. If a slight angle down was know to be better for playing then I would cut / trade etc the legs and rods.
no one has said that an angle down would be a bennifit. At this point
I will have local resident Tom Bradshaw add an extention.

Jeff

I am also 5' 8" and have had my guitars 1" under for 30+ years. It is the only way to go comfortably for me.

A fine steel guitar, just like a $30,000 Italian shotgun ( I suppose, as I will never own one like that ) is of no value if it does not fit properly.

YMMV......
