"Of interest are the cut bell cranks Russ Wever posted. The primary purpose of those were to add a raise rod support if and where needed. (one is in that little pile of parts to the left.) That is what Fred Trogden said but they were not used or needed on a new axe leaving the factory. By running a socket head screw all the way thru and threading, one could make a secure bell crank to be able to raise & lower. Stuff done in the field on used steels. Years ago Emmons put 2 extra bell cranks on every crossbar to aid in rotating it, to make the pedal rods off or on an easier chore. An owner having access to spare bc's was not a challenge but times have changed. The parts are not as readily available and at prices that makes one want to have a surplus, if desired. Also the fact that some guys make not have ready access to the tools such as taps, drill bits and whatever may be needed to do the desired job.
The sole purpose of this secure instant-on bell crank is to save time and money. Some guys are great players and don't mess with the mechanics but this is a part that Anyone can do in instant, hence, the instant-on bc.
Another feature that is not obvious is the top swivel is extended more than the regular swivel, an aid in raising a string such as the F# to G# by making the raise a little shorter travel. There are a few other features that we won't share now." |
