So I see Telonics claims to roll off the high frequencies on their standard volume pedal. I am wondering, would this somewhat cancel the need for a Freeloader or Steel Guitar Black Box? _________________ Shobud Pro1,BMI U12, Santa Cruz F, PRS Standard, Fender Twin Reverb, ‘53 000-28 |

If you like the tubidity, then you'll still want the Black Box.
Dave Hartley uses a Telonics pedal, but says he noticed an improvement adding an Izzy. It's not just the highs. Buffers add a clarity.
I've not yet played with a BB or Freeloader. I don't find the buffer necessary feeding my Twin, but I won't run SS gear without an Izzy. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

The Lil' Izzy is another steel guitar buffer, like the Freeloader or Goodrich Matchbox. The BB with its tube is a whole 'nother animal. There's a thread or two on here about 'em. When you drop the output impedance, generally clarity and string separation go up. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

Don, i dont notice any loss of HIs using the telonics pedal, it puts out what you put in it, the black box that has the vari-z kinda acts like a tone control that does have an impact on your overall tone, the izzy buffers the signal from your guitar on its way through the chain with great clarity and string seperstion, so from guitar to amp you can use the black box for tube signal and ajust vari-z to fine tune your tone before it hits your V pedal, i cant comment on the freeloader cause ive never owned one but Brad makes great stuff _________________ Rittenberry SD10, 2 nashville 112s with telonics speaker, behringer EPQ450 power amp, 705 pups, Telonics FP-100, live steel strings, mogami cords, wet reverb |

Telonics has a similar impedance loading circuit built in to the pedal but you need a jewlers screwdriver to adjust it. If you want to get to it on the fly, a Sarno product or Little Izzy might be just the thing. _________________ Milkmansound.com |

Thanks Tim, i forgot the telonics had that, i dont ever use it so i forgot it was even there since i do it with my BB anyway, a little easier on the fly just reach down and turn a knob. _________________ Rittenberry SD10, 2 nashville 112s with telonics speaker, behringer EPQ450 power amp, 705 pups, Telonics FP-100, live steel strings, mogami cords, wet reverb |

If one likes to use the vari-z control knob often, then the Telonics is not as handy for that factor and the FreeLoader and Black Box are great companions. But if you find that there's that one Z (impedance) setting you really like and just leave it, then I'd say that a FreeLoader may be redundant with the Telonics, but the Black Box does a LOT more than the tone control. It works the tube magic into the sound and is the best device I know of for dialing in clear, bright low strings and sweet and silky high strings and high registers without any harshness. The Black Box into a Telonics VP is a great combo and would not be redundant whatsoever.

Although, Tim, the Izzy has no adjustment at all, and the trimpot on an Izzy plus only affects gain (from unity to, IIRC, a whopping 24dB; if running the VP in a loop, THAT oughtta saturate yer input. Makes for a good fuzz, hope it doesn't hurt Peavey stuff to do that) _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

Thank you Brad, Tim ,Roger and Lane. I searched this topic and found a 4 page thread that seemed to disintegrate into back and forth rants and bickering, a few comments confirmed everything said here. I look forward to receiving my Black Box and Telonics VP. _________________ Shobud Pro1,BMI U12, Santa Cruz F, PRS Standard, Fender Twin Reverb, ‘53 000-28 |

Bickering is about what you'd expect from a discussion about something that is largely a matter of taste, especially when (in the case of both the Telonics pedal and the Black Box) you spend lots of money to "Clean up" the tone. Nearly everybody using a particular item strongly backs his/hers. And tries to convert others to their ways of thinking.
Then you get folks like top name players who use pot pedals and tube amps. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)
