I seek a 2-hole (preferred) or Rack and Barrel (2nd choice) 12. SD preferred (if I get a D, I'd not pad it, but lap steel it).
Since it will get a cluster and I'm slightly lazy. I want a wide body.
Since I'm gonna rebuild it, I'd rather get a beater and bring it back to life, rather than buy a good condition guitar that doesn't need the attention.

Also, if anyone knows how/where to find the basket cases.

Lane, while I am sure they are out there, in the list by Duane Becker ( http://www.planet.eon.net/~gsimmons/shobud/models.html ) there is not an SD 12 string model listed. I've only seen one Sho-Bud ever listed for sale that was of that vintage that MIGHT have come from Sho-Bud with a Uni- setup:

This is a Craigslist ad from back in Feb, then listed again about May. It is not my ad, and I am not trying to drive business to it - just an unusual Sho-Bud to note. And not a total project.

I think your best bet might be your idea with a D-12 and do the SD-12 conversion. I believe James Morehead has a D-12 body and some parts available. He offered it to me at one point, anyway. I am not sure if he is willing to sell it just as parts (and with his new parts as needed, of course) or if he would rather hold it to fix up himself one day when a buyer arrives.

I have not seen 12-string Sho-Buds (single or double neck) with racks, only with two-hole pullers, but with the plastic tuning nuts - this is what I acquired off of Ebay a while back at a good price. I have parts coming in from a fo' bro, and from James, to make it a 7x5 uni. I do not think it would fit your setup under it very easily.

Of course, there were older 'Buds that were twelve-string, but you'd need to think deeply before piling a bunch of stuff underneath a vintage Perm 'Bud since they have a certain appeal and collectable status in original condition.

As for finding the bargains, well, I think Craig's List generally has better bargains than Ebay these days, and of course, a bargain does come across the forum every now and then. 12-string Sho-Buds are rare enough, though, it will be sheer luck if you find one. I use a search engine that searches all Craigslist locations - just window shopping, as it is hard enough buying an instrument off of the Forum from out here in SE Asia - forget Craigslist, which is no doubt a hotbed for scammers so that many are unwilling to do business except cash on the barrel head. But since you get around a bit (and no doubt have some relatives and buddies in distant parts) you just might find one someplace you can get to or have someone check it out for you.

I use www.searchtempest.com to search Craigslist. When the first Ebay and Amazon listings appear, click the X and you only get Craigslist. Amazing what is out there on Craig's list! However, I just checked, and no D-12's listed at the moment, and no 12-string Sho-Buds... unless, like the one I bought, they forgot to mention that detail in the ad.

My parts are suppose to have left California FINALLY (sheeze, it's hard to get stuff here!) but probably 2 months until I get them and start to universify my Sho-Bud 12. Pics are here:

Good luck!

I'll ask James. Dunno why it didn't occur to me to ask.
A slight Derrrr moment.
Yeah, James has one that he says he doubts he'll have the time for. So we'll see if my time will get it done
