I really like what my 6 band MXR equalizer does for my tone from all my amps. Blackface Twin or Nashville 400 with mod or Roland cube 60. It makes a pretty big difference!

I used one of those right off the steel with a double 1/4" plug for many years... worked great!

I think stomp box EQ pedals are hugely underrated. If you have one placed right next to you in your setup chain you can tweak the tone in an easy and big way. I think the key is to use one that's both way-quiet and as non-loading as can be.

Quiet and non-loading is the key. I've been using a Fish n Chips for years. If I ever had to do some roadwork, I'd probably get the MXR, but the Fish n Chips really helps adjust to the room or band sound that is going on at the time.

So...the fish 'n Chips costs $30, and the others cost $100 and up....actually, there is a Behrenger pedal for about $30 also (and they make high-end EQ also, probably know what they are doing).

What is the difference? Do we need to spend big bucks or is the budget version just fine?

I'd probably think the Danelectro adequate for live work, but higher end stuff needed for the studio or living room player (if it sounds weird, just think: there's no crowded dance floor and no fiddle sawing away and Tele chunking rhythm. MUCH higher noise floor on stage).

The fish n chips is dead quiet and sounds really good; as subtle or wild as you want to go. The switch is also very quiet. Conversely, the switch is the only real weak point, but even then it took 7 years to give out, and I was the second owner. The switch on my latest one feels a little more substantial than the first. I also like the EHX knockout attack eq to alter my humbucker's output to sound more like a single coil.

I'm thinking about getting a "Fish & Chips" and converting my Rogue lap steel into an electric dobro...

I think my new MXR 6 band was somewhere around 60.00 new. I was surprised at how much difference it made even with my Twin. Less "honky" even with everything set flat. Actually, I turned higher frequences down a little.

I remember someone saying that Tommy White used his Webb with the EQ all the sliders set in the middle with the switch in. You would think that would make no difference in/out but obviosly he liked it that way. I have a Boss 7 band EQ and sent it away for some type of mod a few years ago but have not used it.
