I Have been listening to Sacred Steel TV and I must admit the expression and feeling are totally different than what I am used to playing. Problem is, I am basically a pedal steel guy that is using the same type 10 string bar only smaller on my weissenborn and lap steels. What round bar length dimension and thickness should I try?I can't get used to the dobro type bars. Also, what tuning is used?

Never too old for the old dog & new trick thing Smile

Len, I'm not an expert on sacred steel, but I think most of the players use E7. Check out the following link, and also check out the video link posted there: http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=238449&highlight=sacred+tuning

Darick Campbell - Shubb SP-1 and BEBEG#BC# on his Sierra
AJ Ghent - Stevens type and BF#BD#F#G#BC# on his Gold Tone

Messing with Daricks tuning on my Deluxe 8 and I really love the tone. Also found it too tough to use my "bullet" style tone bar and the leading edge of my Stevens snagged so I use a SP-1.

There's some good info out there -- suggest you check out The Slide Brothers as well as the greats from the Keith and Jewell Dominions.

Thanks Doug and all that replied. I have these moments of having to do something right away when I get inspired so at 6:00 this morning I put the proper string gauges on a Peavey power slide and using a Paloma stone slide, very light and easy to lift I started playing through ear phones (wife is sleeping) This is cool and I will have to work at it but I just sent for a DVD on sacred steel instruction.

Oh what fun! Smile

Hey Len

Yeah, it's a challenge and a joy to try to get that singing voice out of those strings the way those sacred steel players do. At this point, mine sounds a little more like a cat fight than a choir. Whoa!

What Instructional DVD did you end up goin' with?

Yeah, that's the one I got. Not much on music theory which is fine because I'm sure you don't need it. He does show you his technique and gives you play along tracks which is fun.

There's a lot more instructional material out there for pedal steel Sacred Steel than lap steel.

I actually bought this DVD for not only the instruction but listening value/technique and the backing tracks.

What happy inspirational music...
