This was given to me after a gig last night in Ripton Vermont. Apparently it was pulled from a dumpster in the area- it's an 8 string single cast aluminum with a dead George L, and a single nob- tone? volume? who knows? It's a pretty good looking body- a few impact dings here and there, and a lot of fingerboard glue. I'll try some different pickups and strings later this week. Does anybody have any leads as to what this might be? Note the three triangle headstock motif-

Most likely a Sho-Bud frypan that has been fiddled with.
Definitely not an Excel.
I have had both.

Don

I hear you Steve- I've had the same thought for years ! In my fantasy it's been a Ric Fry Pan, but this is pretty fantastic. |

were these models fitted originally with horseshoe pickups, or could this be the factory pickup? and what do the original fretboard/fretmarkers look like?

Now young man, better'n just hand that over...
Don't want you to get hurt...
If there's pock marks in the aluminum as if from the original pour, you've got yourself a Jerry Byrd/Shot Jackson very rare frypan!!
It could have had a Jerry Byrd fretboard, or it's one of the sacraligious post JB era "secret" FP's.
Either way, yes it had a non-magnetic horsehoe PU.
You could get a real magnetic HSPU from Lollar or maybe Rick Aiello.

You know, the more I look at it, it's probably a post JB. The body w/o the PU is almost for sure from the same builder.--Shot. |

Does anyone remember the Chinese man in Honolulu that had a music store with records, guitars etc who claimed to have played with all the well-known entertainers? Every once in a while you would catch him in a lie. Had a collection of old 78s. At some point he had fake fry pans for sale. The back plate was screwed onlike the one shown in this post. But I don't know if he ever made an 8-string. I think his name was Chai or something like that. Used quite colorful language with every other word either GD or the F word.
I believe Hal Smith had a taped interview with him at one time. Wally |

Richard Choy/Choi was Korean, and man, I gotta contact Hal and see if he still has that recording! But I doubt it survived the flames that could come out of Choy's mouth... http://steelguitarforum.com/Forum2/HTML/009309.html The old guy was actually one of the sweetest geezers I've ever met, he was just so pissed from decades of WW2 era racism and abuse that he'd bite your face off until you proved you were cool. I really miss him. |

That Frypan was mine and it had a fretboard on it that was my first Tapper (that's why all the glue). I dropped it at the airport, in Seattle, and the fretboard came off and one of the tuners broke, as well as the volume control. Not to get into details, I came to find out that it is probably an "illegal" JB Frypan. Because Jerry Byrd is a hero of mine, I threw it in the dumpster. _________________ Excel 3/4 Pedal With An 8 String Hawaiian Neck, Sierra Tapper (10 string with a raised fretboard to fret with fingers), Single neck Fessenden 3/5

Full circle- thanks for the info Chris- I wish I had met you when I was living in VT-Montpelier area. I'm very curious about what you learned about the instrument- pm me if the details are too incendiary for this forum! I posted a brief update in the frypan pickup question thread above if you're curious.
Best,
Asa |

What an amazing co-incidence that one steel guitarist should throw it into the dumpster and it come into the hands of another steel guitarist.
It obviously doesn't want to die.
Even if it is a copy, I don't think Jerry would be concerned. |
