Just bought an Elite Seat w/backrest without ever having seen one in person, and it feels too shallow for me with the backrest up. Is this common with all seats that have a backrest? Any recommendations on which seat I may be happier with? I feel like I am falling off of this one, maybe my b*tt is just too big!

Pete,

I bought a "Steelers Choice-Easy Rider" seat with a back rest from Bobbe Seymour's steel shop in Nashville. In my opinion, it is very comfortable. It also as a lot of storage space inside.

I was given a seat, new in the box as a gift. It had 4 inch foam on the seat back as a pad. It was to shallow for me at 5'9" and 180 lb. I carefully removed the cover on the back. The foam was glued to the back board. Measuring and marked at 2 inches remaining, a very sharp French chef's knife sliced the foam cleanly. Replaced the cover and It has been very comfortable since the modification. It took some work but it made it comfortable for long playing sessions. Good Luck and Comfortable Steelin.

When I first got my Steeler's Choice seat, I had the same experience. I think it's just because I was used to sitting farther back on the backless seat that I previously had. I got used to it quickly and I think having the lower back support helps a lot. I would just give it some time, you will get used to it.

My back and bottom couldn't live without my Steelers Choice-Easy Rider with back rest.

I just purchased my seconded one. First one is twenty years old and looks like new......except for the form fit contours in the seat from my hiney.

I don't like 'em either Pete. Cushion too narrow as well and I'm a small guy. MOF, I sold my SC with a back rest and went back to my 30 yr. old Sho-Bud seat.

Maybe the ones with boat seat hinges recline a little further back and are more comfortable. I acquired a set of used ones but I never got around to using them.

I have had a Steeler's Choice since I started. I just bought a second-hand Elite to keep at our other place to save carrying it back and forth (never enough room in the truck). Comparing the two side by side, it seemed the SC back opened to a wider angle then the Elite. It did not bother a tall skinny guy like me but it might be an issue for someone else. Maybe there is a way you can adjust or modify the back on the one you have now.

If it helps you, I can get a photo of the two side by side but it will be a few days before I can do so.

Most of the steel seats made aren't deep enough for really good comfort, IMHO. The Steeler's Choice is only 12 1/2" or 13" deep, and a good seat (with back rest) should be at least 15"-16" deep. The design theory behind the shallower seat is that a deep seat will restrict side-to-side leg movement somewhat, providing friction when you're operating knee levers.

Personally, I'd rather deal with the friction than an uncomfortable seat.

Not everyone answers to the name of Hugh Jass of course Laughing ... but the Steelers Choice Sidecar offers a little more room for "expansion"

The "side-car" designs add to the width, but not the depth. Muttering I also don't like legs with no adjustments, and the cheap "block and wingnut" approach they all seem to use to secure the legs.

Me too, the one I started with is a home made one and is 14" deep, but no backrest. I think a backrest takes away a couple of inches of seat, so 15 or 16" deep with a backrest would be about perfect!

Thanks for all the replies!

I bought an older used Kline seat which the owner had added the back rest using boat seat hinges, which kind of cantilever out, and is a perfect fit for me. Never measured the seat but sets fine. ... Very Happy

check out steelseat.com

My seat cushion is 13 front to back and 17 wide - approx and the back rest does not take up that room you are talking about.

6 models to choos from and the "Original" model is the deepest one. I have also toyed with the idea of no legs and making the "BOX" go all the way to the floor.

check out www.steelseat.com - my email and phone are on there.

I can give you exact dimensions.

Thanks

Pete, sorry to take a while but here's a photo of my Elite and Steeler's Choice back to back. This pretty much shows the difference in the angle and as you can see there's enough there to possibly cause an issue for some folks. Also, the padding on the backrest of the SC is concave, while the Elite is straight or maybe even slightly convex. I'm not sure if you can somehow modify the one you have, or maybe sell it and give Joe a call. (I will say I have been very happy with the SC)

I have one of Joe Naylor's Steel Seats (with back rest) and find that I sit back and lean back more than ever. Very comfortable.
