A neighbour and friend of mine built this instrument to my specs using his imagination and came up with some unique ideas for design.
His name is Tony Phalen so I called it the "Tone-oto" Smile

We left a string space between 4 and 5 so I could get the Bar in there for some float melody lines.
The instrument is tuned as per the Japanese Koto.

That's really nice, Roy. Mellowness from the wood with just the right amount of metally sound mixed in. What's the purpose of the strings extending beyond the nut? Can you play the strings there, or get string bends by pressing down on them? Or is it just for the extra contact with the wood for the sake of tone?

Hi Steve,

The main purpose was to keep the keys down and out of the way to allow more freedom of the left hand. I don't know whether it has any effect on the tone or the overall sound of the instrument?

Astounding dynamics. The sensitivity of a cellist. Thank you for sharing that beautiful piece.
