You learn something new every day.........

I was talking with Lynn Stafford (he sure knows his stuff!) about Emmons' pickups and he mentioned in passing that there were two different kinds of single-coil construction. Earlier single coils were not "aligned" in that the narrow edges of the coil were not equidistant from the edge of the plate. In short, the coil was offset and not "centered" on the plate. Later pickups, however, were made symmetrically where all sides were equidistant from the outside edges. I didn't know that.

Later, after thinking about it, I had a few questions for those who are in the know about that.

- Why did Emmons offset the earlier single coils that way?
- Why did Emmons make the switch to an "aligned" single coil?
- Approximately when did they make that change?

Thanks.

Either you misunderstood what Lyn told you or he made a mistake, because there were more than two kinds of Emmons single coils. I can think of four different styles of Emmons pickups used in 1964 alone, different ways of mounting the pickups, different wiring and controls, different coil shapes and winding. Even a different pickup manufacturer, because after all, Emmons did not make its early pickups. I would not refer to the pickups you are asking about as earlier. There were a lot of Emmons pickup styles before the one you are asking about.

Your questions refer to the offset pickup which was simply a way to align the pickup magnets with the strings. You never really notice it until you fit a pickup in backwards and the poles are in the wrong places.

When Emmons made the switch, I cannot tell you as I don't collect/study/compare Emmons guitars after 1965. I have some, but I do not have enough of the post jig guitars to set up side by side and examine the differences and how those differences may affect the way the guitars play and sound. I can do that with Wraparounds, however.

Thanks, Chris, for the info.

I'm sure that it was me who misunderstood Lynn.
