I would appreciate any views people hold on the boutique Fender-clone amp maker Headstrong. I understand they are known for making very faithful reproductions of blackface era amps (their Royal Reverb version of a Deluxe Reverb, for example). I have a line on a Royal Reverb for what seems a very good price.
I would be using this with six string guitars (primarily jazz archtops) rather than steel.
Especially helpful would be any comparisons with other boutique makers (Allen, Carr Rambler, Vintage Series Amps, etc.). I have an old silverface Princeton (which is fantastic), so this would be the next step up in term if power and headroom. 20 - 22 wats, for example.
PS. I'm aware of the Milkman brand made by fellow nutmeg-stater Tim Marcus; those indeed look glorious. |

I spent some time playing one of their Princeton Reverb clones ( I forget the name) and I was underwhelmed. I was trying out Collings electrics so the signal I was feeding it was decent. The quality seemed ok but the tone was really lackluster. If it is just like the Fender, then I'm sure it could be tweaked some but for the price (maybe you're getting a great deal and this does not apply) it didn't really impress me.
I love the Carr Rambler. With the exception of my old Vibrolux Reverb, the Carr is the best small-medium amp I've ever heard. The Rambler has an unbelievable amount of headroom for a two 6L6 amp, and when it's in triode mode, it has perfect breakup. |

I had a Headstrong amp that was amazing. It was a princeton clone. They are top level well built pro amps. If you like how it sounds and you can get it for a good price grab it while you can.
