I purchased two, (a 50 and a 100) Peavey ValveKing amplifiers a few months ago, my first tube amps in more than 30 years. I've been using them exclusively and have come to like the 50 watt best.
I replaced the reverb pan with a Accutronics, and the speaker with a Electro Voice 12" in the 50, and a Black Widow 15" in the 100. Also a new Accutronics reverb in the 100.
I played out with one of my Vegas 400 amps a couple of weeks ago and it just wasn't the same. It would be hard to go back.
The Valve King amps are a good bargain in my opinion, and I like to play through them. I love the sound and can't get enough.
I am going to try some other tube amps, and who knows what I will find. However, right now the Valve Kings are king. _________________ You can observe a lot just by looking |

Hi Bill- Regarding your 50 watt, could you expand a little on the "why" of the speaker and reverb selection? Do you think Telonics or Eminence might do just as well for the speaker?
Also enjoyed your seat/amp?/speaker project. Hope you'll post some more photos as you progress. What type of adjustable legs do you think you'll use? Nice job- it's looking good!
Thanks, Don Oakley |

Hey Don,
As for the 50 watt VK; I'm sure either of those speakers would work fine. I chose the Electro Voice because I had it, and the VK speaker that was in it needed to go. I also had a couple of different JBL's, and a SRO in it. I finally settled on the EV. Mainly because I wanted to use the SRO for another project, and I thought the EV sound better than the JBL's.
I have a weakness for classic speakers, and I am always on the look out for them.
Pertaining to the "Pack a Backup" seat. The adjusters are screwed out of the center of the wood feet I made, the adjusters are concealed. All of my electronic materials are in and I have completed the finish application and hope to buff it and assemble this coming weekend. I will post more pictures. _________________ You can observe a lot just by looking |

Thanks Bill, I was thinking of searching for an old Valve King and making my own cabinet, for lightness as well as a retro look. I've done a lot of woodworking, including guitars, but never an amp enclosure. I'm guessing I'll need to keep a certain amount of weight to it for the speaker to not vibrate the cabinet. Know any good books on the subject?
Looking forward to your photos when you get around to it.
Best regards- Don |

Don, I built a new cabinet for the 50 and 100. I put the 50 back in the original cabinet, I liked it better original. I used spruce for the 50 watt cabinet and it was enclosed as well, and fairly light. But the 50 is so much more convenient as original, and I like the open back sound better for the 50. Also the 50 watt is so small and easy to carry as is. I don't believe another type of wood would make a difference in the sound. At least not enough to make a contribution.
The 100 watt I kept in the new cabinet that is enclosed and made of figured maple. I like the sound of the 100 watt amp in the enclosed cabinet with the 15" Black Widow speaker. It is heavy. Pretty, and sounds good, but heavy. I may get another 100 watt as a head only and use it with a separate speaker for playing out, and keep the "pretty" one home in my pickin' room. _________________ You can observe a lot just by looking |

Hey Bill- Looks like I didn't have to search very hard. I just bought a used "cheapie" 50 watt from Guitar Center(out of state). I thought $ 199 was pretty cheap and gave me a little room, money-wise, for a new speaker. I figure if I don't like it, I'm not out that much and can maybe switch the new speaker that I'll get into my Nashville 112.
Did you notice a big improvement by switching to a new spring reverb?
Thanks, Don |

As for a new spring reverb, not much difference. At least not as much as I thought there would be. The speaker made the most sound improvement. _________________ You can observe a lot just by looking |
