Hi folks I am new to electric lap guitars so sorry in advance if this question is stupid. I have recently aquired a Rickenbacker B6 lap steel. It is a string through body and has the 1 1/4 horseshoe pickup. The white plates are metal and not celuloid. Not sure what year that makes it but I guess it is a late one.

The guitar had no strings on so I have fitted a set of ernie ball electric guitar strings which are 56 - 12.

I tend to play G and D tunings and I imagine that these strings are not the best. Should I be picking a particular brand?

All strings sound bright apart from the 3rd string (F# on open D tuning) This string sounds dull and has much less volume than the others.

Does anyone know what I am doing wrong or does this mean the pickup needs a repair?

Again sorry if this is a stupid question I have only ever played accoustic lap steel.

Thanks in advance.

Warm Regards

Andy

Have you changed that string to check? - I find lap steel string sets awful for dead strings. I bought some sets of Scotty's gauged sets and every one had a dead middle E.
Look at the nut and also the bridge for clues - thats usually where you find the problem.
You could take a screwdriver and tap that pole (with gtr plugged in) for reference to the others also.

Pole might have been pushed down at some point, or it may have lost some magnetism, or maybe moving that side of the PU a bit higher may be all it needs. The screws at either end of the shoes is where you adjust.

Hi,

Thanks guys I will check out all the things you have suggested. Thanks for taking the time I appreciate it.

This is a bit of a voyage of discovery for me. I have already Identified that it is very different to accoustic lap playing. I can already make a really nasty noise. I just have to work out how to make a nice one now.

Regards

Andy

Gents,

Thanks you very much for your help. I now have a working 3rd string.

Could some one give me some advice as a good set of strings to buy and get started with. I will be using mostly D and G tuning.

Regards

Andy

Would it be too much to ask how you fixed it? What was the problem? How did we help?
