Hi I am trying to find out information on a Jerry Byrd 8 string Fry Pan Lap Steel that is made in Japan serial number JA070. I might be selling it but do not know anything about or what it is worth. Any info would be greatly appreciated. The lap steel and the case are in excellent condition.
Thanks
Dan

A couple of years back, both a Shot-Jackson JERRY BYRD Fry Pan and the Excel model were both being offered for sale at $1,000 each at Scotty's International Steel Guitar Convention. I paid that amount for a Shot Jackson issue several years ago. |

I paid $1000 for my Shot Jackson model about 5 years ago. It's a fair price. - Jack _________________ Jack Aldrich

Thanks you so much. But I still don't know exactly what model it is or where I can find out what year it was made? Also I think I would be interested in selling it for $1000 if anyone is interested. I will put it in the classified section as soon as I can ID it properly. Thanks again Dan |

The Excel frypan was modified at some point. When I was in Hawaii in around 2003, Fuzzy was there selling the frypans. I looked at serial # 041, which was different then earlier models. Not sure when they were changed. The earlier serials had a cover on the bottom, and the one he showed me was quite different, with a slightly larger diameter, and thicker body section.
Another HSGA member had an older model there at the time, and we compared them.
The horseshoe magnets are for appearance, and not active magnets.
Great looking guitars though, and for $1000 bucks it would be a steal in my opinion.... |

As Bill pointed out ... The newer ones are much nicer ... A very attractive finish on the pan ...
I have an early Excel JB ( circa 1987) ... With the back plate.
The pickups in both are the same ... My original was a 14 k Ohm Alnico 5 based unit ... with chromed steel non magnetized " horseshoes" .
These fauxs do alter the magnetic circuit ... steel backed magnets are stronger (Recruiting domains in the steel) ... And the top flange of the faux elongates the return path for the lines of force ...
Subtle .. But significant enough to alter the tone ( compared to simply mounting the unit w/o the fauxs )... Added Eddy currents ( affects the high end), grounded fauxs help reduce RF interference and noise, etc ....
That said, I will say the " Lion's share" of my pickup work over the years ... has been retrofitting ShoBud and Excel JB Frypans .... In one way or another |
