I wish you'd asked six months ago: I was calling and emailing just about everybody.
From memory (could be wrong, I'll try to go back over my old emails), almost everyone makes a U-12 except: Fred Justice, Rus-Ler, and Show Pro: I don't recall Lone Star's answer. Unless Paul Sr. gets an order cancellation, he had two 12 string necks and orders for both. ISTR Bent hadn't, but would consider it.
PS: memory's all I got. Every email from 2009 to March have disappeared _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)
More amps than guitars, and not many effects |

Doug Seymour does not. (I'd love to have an Encore 12 string) Nor does Legend (formerly Carpsteel.) Nor does Keven Hatton. Emmons uses to make P-P 12 strings, but as far as I know, they don't make a U-12 legrand. ETS of course went under when Larry Agin died, but they too did not make a 12 string.
Does Rittenberry make one? _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

Hey Mike,,,ETS had plans to start making Uni's starting in July,,,of course Larry's accident stopped those plans. I don't know if ETS will start again when when all the legal issues are resolved or not. I think they were going to be a GREAT steel!!! |

Yes, I understand Rittenberry will make one. There was one posted here on the Forum a few months ago. |

I should let these guys speak for themselves so take this with a grain of salt but...
When I bought my Infinity from Frank Carter he indicated that one he sold me would be the last 12. He also noted that Bruce Zumsteg plans to discontinue making 12s. Frank mentioned the demand is low and he can't get the volume up enough on the machined parts like end plates and necks to get the price down. A few parts are burdened with all of the NR set up cost.
Who knows though. I imageine all PSG manufacturers have to respond to market demands and if suddenly there were an increase in demand they would meet it.
In fact, it seems funny to me that new players still buy double 10s with the weight/cost disadvantage.
It would be interesting to see some statistics on the volume of S12 purchases vs D10 over the last ten years.
The old arguments like "a single 12 doesn't sound as good as a double 10" or "a 12 has more cabinet drop" are proven wrong lately in my experience.
Perhaps the same 10000 people buy two or more PSGs over their lifetime and acount for the majority of the sales. What may account for the continued popularity of the D10 is the fact that If you learned on a D10 you are motivated to continue on one.
I would think that, like the four neck steel popularity died with the arrival of string bending mechanics, the double neck will eventually die with the refinement of said mechanics. |

Thanks for this thread. Fessenden is definitely on the list as well.
I recently started playing U12 on a converted Emmons PP 12 string. I am really into the universal tuning. I think eventually I am going to want to get a second U12 so I hope these vendors keep making them.
Incidentally the Emmons tone is really blowing my mind. The combination of push-pull tone with the universal tuning makes this guitar really, really special. I love it! _________________ http://music.karenandthesorrows.com/ |

I have a U-12 Williams keyless with 8 and 6... super small and light. Plays and stays in tune. I play D-10s and S-10s and the Uni 12. I hope that the 12 stays around with builders... the more that I play it, the more that I like the one big tuning approach. Still dialing in the copedent, but it's close. The LKL2 on Carl Dixon's Uni is going on next......
Lana, what does your copedent look like... I tried doing a PP uni several years ago, but couldn't get all the changes that I wanted on it. Larry Bell has a good setup on his U-12 PP |
