I have recently purchased a 1970 Sho-Bud Professional that was refurbished by Duane Marrs when he was at Show Pro.

The pickups sound great, but are very microphonic, and pick up every little squeak, creak, and rattle out of the undercarriage. They also pick up a great deal of 60 cycle hum. I'm thinking of having a friend pot them for me, but I'm not quite sure what to do about the coil taps.

The E9 changer was replaced, and the holes in the end plate that had accommodated the coil-tap micro-switches were used for screws to mount the changer.

Should I reconnect the coil-taps, and find a place under the guitar to mount perhaps a small piece of wood in which I might install the switches (there are enough old, but currently unused holes under there that I need not alter the guitar any further), or should I put them back the way they were? Would the dangling coil tap wires perhaps be part of my hum problem?

Or might you recommend a full rewind, with or without taps instead?

Thanks for your advice,
Rob.

I love my microphonic 'Bud, not only does it sound awesome but I can order a beer from the bar by simply speaking into the pickup Cool You do have to pick it like you mean it and occasionally take steps to manage the 'howl' but the sound is so yummy!

Don't go messing with that pickup, if you don't like it there are folks who will buy it from you for what it is. The mechanical sensitivity of the 'microphonic' pickup is largely responsible for that warm, gritty, wailing, long sustain, which will disappear if you change it. Just saying...
