Along with several other fine players, Doug Jernigan played at the Indy Steel Guitar club meeting today. He was the featured performer.
Amazing. Then again, all the adjectives one could use to describe his playing seem inadequate. |

I agree with you Eric. I was in total amazement the entire time Doug was playing. I especially liked the new tuning that he showed us. I went out to dinner with Jerry Fessenden and the gang after the show and he explained a little more about the tuning that Doug is using. It's an amazing idea. And.. how many times can you say " I heard a steel guitar player playing "BACH" Wow what a show!! _________________ St. Blues 1984 "Holy Grail"

It was a great show and very enjoyable. We were really impressed with David Graves. His set with Jerry was very good . Keep it going David and you will make it to Nashville.

It's really not that new. If you search Avenger tuning on the forum search function you'll find quite a bit written about it.

David, For someone who has been playing steel for "about a year" your chops are impressive to say the least. And some of us old timers, still have to look at the fret board to play. But not you
Nice Mullen! by the way. ..Mark |

Crud. I missed a great opportunity to see him.
Glad you guys were in attendance! Hopefully there will be a "next time" for me to make it. BTW, where does the Indy Steel Guitar Club meet? That's a club I probably should join! I'm sure I'd learn a thing or two. |

George and Mark.. Thank you so much for the compliments and encouragement. I've been in love with the steel guitar since I played on the same stage back in 83' with a monster picker named Myron Smith. I've been hooked since that day, but never got the chance to learn to play one. I've always been the "lead guitar / banjo guy." But I got my Mullen a couple of years ago but never had the chance to really sit down at it for over a couple of days then things would happen and the steel would get covered up for another 4 or 5 months until the itch would once again bite me. Thanks to guys like Denny Barnes, and Dave Jackson I got it back out this past Christmas and it's staying out. I'm hooked on the thing...now just got to learn how to play it right. Thanks again. _________________ St. Blues 1984 "Holy Grail"

David,
You're on the right path. I've only been playing steel for two years but I've played dobro for thirty or so, so I understand how you kept pushing it into the future. You sounded great and I'm looking forward to hearing more of you on steel. Regards,

I too was impressed with the 'Bach' Doug played on the steel. It was also great to hear the new licks that Doug got from that new tuning. By the way..I bought a 1962 National six string no pedal three legged guitar a little over a year ago. I decided to try to learn how to play it. I love it. The reason that I didn't buy a pedal steel is that with the six string no pedals I have an excuse for not playing a lot of the licks that others play and I'm too old to learn 10 strings with a bunch of pedals anyway. LOL. Does the Indy Steel Guitar Club allow any non pedal players to join their jam?
Nice to meet you at the show David Graves.

Dave Burley.. It was great to meet you as well. I'm sure the Indy steel club would welcome you with open arms! They love ALL steel guitars! It was unfortunate that "Scotty" could not make it this year. I was amazed at how much music he can get out of a non pedal fry pan!! He's great! You can always contact Sharon, Jerry Fessenden, or any of the club members if you have any questions. They are the nicest bunch of folks you'll ever meet! Take care and thanks again. Hope to see you on August 18th. _________________ St. Blues 1984 "Holy Grail"

You could hire Doug for any gig, any kind of music, and rest assured that he'd get the job done with all the taste, tone, and expertise needed. I can't say that about a lot of my favorite players. I have my favorites in certain styles of music, but Doug is a master of everything. |

don't forget how long doug has been there in the shadows.along with buddy, he was the closest of anyone to beautiful tone and hot swingin' country jazz licks on hillbilly jazz with vassar. and that was no later than 70 or so. i always felt he deserved more press than he got. but who cares...if you can play that well you're probably fairly content. you've always been famous to me doug! |

Hey Rick,
So true, so true of Doug. I had the pleasure of working with Doug a couple weeks ago, not a steel show, but a couple regular gigs on a Friday and Sat night. Mostly traditional country, Buck, Merle, George etc, and he absolutely nailed it all. Like you said, whatever is called for, he delivers. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I just don't see how that contraption could be played any better.
By the way Rick, I haven't seen you in quite a while, hope you're doing well. Call me some time.
See ya soon,
Jim |

I can't ad much to what has been said. Well, I have been a Diggin' Doug fan for over 35 years.
Here's you a true story, when I went to play in Florida back in 1980. Guys who knew him from when he was just a kid said that there would be 200 people on a dance floor and they would just stop and listen to Doug's playing. Mind you he was all of 12 years old then.
Simply put Doug Jernigan is one of the top steel players in the world, and has been for a long, long time. In my opinion, he might be in the top three for that duration. As stated by others here, he can play anything and does it all!
As we can get the details worked out, we are inviting him to be a special guest at one of our steel shows here in Missouri.
Just my thoughts on a genius of steel guitar!

First saw Doug in '71 with Jim and Jesse. What? A bluegrass band with a steel? You bet. But then, where wouldn't Doug Jernigan fit-in? He selects especially good material, and every arrangement is very melodious. Doug is equally at home on either the Hawaiian neck or the Kroger neck
You saw a great entertainer and a true gentleman. Doug brings it all to every performance. All except the ego.
