Guitar woods are alway a hit topic among guitar builders but some trees not too far from me are yeilding a good sound. Ages ago an old friend started planting trees because he liked the foliage. Turns out they were Tasmanian Blackwoods (a cousin of koa) and now that they are getting pretty big, he's cutting a few to make furniture. Naturally I am calling by and grabbing a few quartersawn bits before they become tables. This Golden Bay blackwood has a summery tone that matches its golden colours. Another guitar coming up.

Now thats a good friend! ... beautiful set. Tasmanian Blackwood is some great timber, unfortunately we don't see a lot of it up here. _________________ Some misc pics of my hand crafted steels

Hi Paddy, I just played one of your guitars the other day at the Music Emporium. It had great volume, responsiveness .... a tone I'd characterize as "rich and throaty."

i like the rosette and binding. i know nothing about guitar building. are the rosettes inlaid before the soundhole is cut out? |

Hey sliders, thanks for your comments.
Regarding the rosette,...I normally inlay it before the soundhole is cut so I have more wood to support all that fiddling about with chunks of rope binding and purfling. I figure there's less chance of splitting the top with an over enthusiastic use of clamps etc.
Without the soundhole cut, it's also easier to scrape off all that glue and muck once the rosette is installed. The scraper can catch on the edge of the soundhole and ooops,...then you have a repair job on a guitar that is not even made!
Regards
Paddy. |

OK I'm part way through building the weissenborn with the wood pictured. I'm taking photos as I go and posting them on the Now in Stock page on my website.

I should be finished in a week or two as I am building a couple of guitars at the same time. |
