Big Bluegrass week around here. Watching PBS specials. One of them was Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver.
Josh Swift on that Meredith reso. Good Grief! Terrific player of course, but the sound of that thing. Out of this world. Do they all have that amazing tone? |

The Meredith is a really great dobro, but it's Josh Swift that produces that tone. At least 90% of the difference between great tone and lousy is in the hands of the player. There are other guitars fully capable of sounding as good or better, Scheerhorn, Beard, Clinesmith, etc, (insert your favorite) _________________ Greg

I own a Clinesmith , but have played a Meredith owned by Jared Womack, a great player from Atlanta. I was very impressed with its tone and punch. |

Tooter Meredith builds a world class instrument for sure. He is a local and several guys here play them. I have also played several of his instruments at his shop.
Greg makes a very good point about how much of the tone is the result of the player. Over the years, I have come to believe that if you are looking for a great guitar, you must play it for yourself. There is no substitute for hearing what the guitar sounds like in your hands.

Greg and Dave are right on. A good dobro can become a great dobro after you have made friends with it. You learn to exploit the character of an instrument. _________________ LeGrande II, Nash. 112, Fender Twin Tone Master, Session 400, Harlow Dobro, R.Q.Jones Dobro |
