I'm buying a new Roland Cube 80XL today and would love some starting point settings for steel, and maybe a couple of effects settings.
Thanks in advance,
Billy

I have the Cube 80, got it about 4 years ago, before the 80XL came out. It's been a workhorse for me, I play it on small venues and big stages. For larger venues I hook up an external speaker with an EV-15. That's enough gain for me.
My settings for steel are bass: 10; mid: 4; highs: 5; presence: 5. The last two vary depending on which guitar I'm playing. For guitar I set all three about at 5. I set the delay on the Warm setting about 9:00; the reverb on the Spring setting about 9 or 10:00. You'll have to experiment with the Tap setting for delay, mine is fairly fast.
I use the JC 120 setting for both steel and guitar. I'm sure a tube amp would be warmer for guitar but I like a clean sound and use a distortion pedal when we need to rock out. ;~). One of my favorite features for the Cube is the Acoustic model setting. I often play an Ovation classical guitar for a solo performance and that combination sounds great to my ear.
This amp does it all for me. I haven't owned any of the small Fenders guitarists seem to love but those are good for overdrive and I don't generally like that. I have owned several Fender Twins and I think I'm over those. I'm probably over the Peavey amp cult but I recently played thru a Nashville 112 and was impressed with it. The Cube's portability is a feature I appreciate more as time goes by and the built in effects make it a winner for me. One drawback: the chorus, flange, faze, tremolo effects are all on one rotary knob so the parameters for those are very limited. I occasionally use phase and have a stomp box for that. I give the Cube 80 "two thumbs up." |
