I'm often having trouble finding the right volume pedal level, when playing onstage. Especially the lead level. I play a lot of festivals on fairly big stages, and I often feel my lead level is too loud compared to when I'm not playing lead. I don't want to turn down my amp, because then I can't hear myself properly when not playing lead. I'm pretty sure the problem lies in the way I use the Volume pedal...
I read in an older post that some players set their volume pedal at 80% for lead level. Is that a common way to do it?
That would be a big challenge for me, since I easily get carried away when playing lead, resulting in pushing the V-pedal too far, picking very hard etc...
Any advice would be very much appreciated. |

My back-up stuff uses about 30% of the throw, lead about 50%, and all the rest is for sustain. The way I look at it, you should save 40%-50% for sustain (holding those 15 second chords and notes with no volume change). I'm also an advocate at running the amp at maximum volume - always! I do all volume regulation at the pedal, and absolutely none at the amp.
This is what I do, but you'll hear a lot of other suggestions, I'm sure. In the end, what's right for you is what makes you sound best. |

Playing big stages it's always a good idea to get some of your steel in the fold back to keep you from playing too loud -- !! along with developing good volume pedal control of course _________________ 14'Zumsteel Hybrid D10 9+9

I'm with Donny, mostly. I set the amp for max clean volume. Nothing like needing more sustain and finding the volume pedal dimed. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

My "non-lead" level is probably from 1/4 to 1/3 of the way, and loudest lead position is maybe 2/3 of the way down, but more like 1/2 the way down. That gives me a lot of extra throw for the long sustaining notes that are sometimes needed. Like DOnny and Lane, I set my amp to a certain volume at every gig, with a few exceptions where I will reduce the volume, and control my volume with the volume pedal and how hard I pick with my right hand. I also have my volume pedals adjusted so that in the full off position, there is still some sound that comes through. Not much, but some. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) .
