Maybe it is a stupid idea, but how about having a booth for the Forum at some of the major steel shows around the country? I don't know how much costs would accumulate for that, but there are still folks around who have never heard about the forum, maybe that would be a way to reach them. I am also sure that there would be some volunteers who would spend some time in the booth, explaining the Forum. b0b's presence wouldn't even be required all the time (I am sure that he doesn't have the time to do this or be present at all the shows...). A lot of "seasoned" forumites are attending those shows...
Just a thought!
Kind Regards, Walter

I wonder if this should be in Feedback.
I'll leave here for a while.
I don't see what purpose a booth would serve.[This message was edited by Joey Ace on 28 July 2006 at 08:48 PM.] |

A booth, a many shows is $$$. That alone would be a big issue, let alone someone (or more than one) to staff the booth. Then there is the cost of the materials (e.g. flyers), etc.
If the forum were a "for profit" entity then it may be different, but it's not. |

Too many places too little staff. Not to mention our staff never confers as a group at one time.

I would be happy to provide and have the flyers availible at my booth. I'm sure there are plenty of other vendors who would do the same. |

It's always like a 10 minute family reunion when Ann and John Fabian shoot the forum photo. It's such fun - But then it ends! I think we should have a Meet 'n Greet HOUR with champaign and Caviar, maybe - or beer and pretzels - or even milk and cookies.

For the most part, I like to move around at shows instead of being stuck at a booth. I do plan to have a table at the Arizona show in January, though. It's within driving distance (barely). I hope to load up the van with Steel Guitarist magazines to finance my trip, and the SWSGA has graciously consented to let me perform on the stage. I'm really looking forward to it.
As for St. Louis, I hope to catch a ball game too while I'm there this year. Hard to do from a booth...

Hey b0b,
If your main reason for not doing it is being tied down to the booth, I'm positive that the various Moderators would gladly take shifts, as would many of us Members. And remember, the booth doesn't have to be open ALL the time either... |

To Joey it would let non members know of the forum.
If it is OK I can set up some flyers at a table in Saluda just to say here is a forum where you can talk to steel players and exchange ideas. If this meets B0B's approval I will do it.

Ernest brings up a good point, we have many smaller shows where maybe a small table with a single page informational flyer would be the ticket.
A brief description and web address ...
You don't really have to man the table all day either, many shows are small enough where that would not be necessary.
What say yee b0b?

I question how many people going to a steel guitar show are unfamiliar with this forum. If the purpose is to spread the word, you'd be better off setting up a table at NAMM or Loni's Amp show. I think you'd be preaching to the choir at a steel guitar show. |

I would donate towards a booth. By the way, 2005 group picture of forum members. Was it ever put on the web? If so where? |

The Forum is such a fact-of-life to many of us who participate that I've been surprised at how many steel players DON'T know of its existence.
At the Medora Musical (my ND Summer gig), we're required to hang around for a few minutes after the show's finished and meet-and-greet members of the audience who might be inclined to chat. I've spoken with four guys who play in the last few weeks - three of them were unaware of the Forum.
I think that's a telling statistic.
Maybe b0b could design a flyer that stall-holders could download and print; it'd be a low-cost venture, and it surely couldn't hurt...

I agree it couldn't hurt, but as Bill M. posted, I don't think anyone new would be reached.
Roger, did the guys you talked to have computers with Internet access? The only Steelers I've talked to that don't know about the Forum, are not on line.
I would think anyone that has in interest in our instrument would do a search on Google, or another search engine, for Steel Guitar. This Forum is always in the top 5 or 10, and most of the sites above it have links to us.
I enjoy browsing the shows, visiting old and new friends, seeing new stuff. I would visit the booth, like I visit all others, but wouldn't be interesting in staffing it.

Here's a stupid idea, but it's all mine, how about a pin or button with the steel guitar forum logo on it and sell them here on the forum as a fund raiser, and wear them at the various shows, at least we could tell how many forum members there are at a particular show...and a nice conversation starter also! |

I think that people should know that if it weren't for the SGF there would not have been so many steel shows to begin with.
So giving the SGF a booth would be the least of their problems.MO is that b0b's forum has helped the whole steel guitar community since it started.
Leroy,I like your idea.Lets all try to come up with some more idea's
